Belize is fast becoming one of the top travel destinations in the Caribbean. This small island country is located off the shores of Mexico and Guatemala. Belize has been occupied for thousands of years. The country was first settled by the early Mayan and Carib Indians. By the 16th century, Belize found itself under Spanish rule. Belize became a British territory in 1798 and finally gained its independence in September 1981. The country has prospered over the centuries by way of farming, logging and fishing. In recent years, Belize has benefited from a boom in the travel industry.
Despite its size, Belize has much to offer a traveler. Here are some of the top travel destinations in the country.
Belize City. This was once the capital of the country until it was almost destroyed by Hurricane Hattie in 1961. Although the capital was moved to Belmopan, Belize City remains the largest town in the country. Belize City is not a resort town. However, the town does offer easy access to the nearby international airport and the country¡¯s only municipal airport.
A person visiting Belize City can see the Swing Bridge. The bridge is located over Haulover Creek which divides the city into various districts.
Battlefield Park is located south of the bridge. A visitor to this area can find a number of street vendors along the route. The vendors offer a wide assortment of local cuisine and souvenirs.
Visitors should also take time to stop by St. John¡¯s Cathedral. The red brick building is the site of several coronations and is considered Central America¡¯s oldest Anglican Church.
Orange Walk District. A person traveling north of Belize City will find the Orange Walk District. Once one of the country¡¯s main exporters of sugar cane, the people of Orange Walk District have changed their farming techniques to include the production of soybeans and citrus fruits.
Any traveler will be in awe of this region of Belize. Orange Walk District is home to a wide assortment of wildlife. Particularly of interest are the 400 species of birds. Some are found only in this area of the country.
Godoy¡¯s Orchid Garden is another attraction in the Orange Walk District. The garden is home to over 200 species of orchids as well as other native flowers. Many of the flowers grown in the garden are dispersed to a number of locations throughout Belize.
Lamanai. This Mayan site is one of Belize¡¯s top archaeological reserves. Lamanai is not an easy area to reach. Most visitors arrive via a boat trip along the New River from the Orange Walk District.
Most archaeologists believed Lamanai was founded around 1500 BC and was a large Mayan settlement until the late 1600¡¯s. Today, most of the area remains unexcavated. A person traveling to Lamanai can view hundreds of Mayan structures including a small temple that was constructed around 100 BC.
Cayes. The Cayes are one of the largest barrier reefs in the world. Stretching for 180 miles, the Cayes are located along the northern part of Belize.
The Ambergris Caye is less than a mile east of San Pedro. At 25 miles long and just under four miles across at its widest point, it is the largest caye found in Belize.
Although Ambergris Caye was a popular destination for pirates in the 17th century, today it is one of the favorite tourist spots in Belize. The caye offers visitors a variety of activities. A person will have fun snorkeling, windsurfing and sailing.
Ambergris Caye is also home to Marco Gonzalez. This Mayan ruin is located on the southern part of the caye. Built in 200 BC, the ruin is believed to have been the trading center of the region.
Mountain Pine Ridge. A nature enthusiast should never leave Belize without visiting the Mountain Pine Ridge. Located in the western part of the country, Mountain Pine Ridge is over 300 square miles of forests and wildlife.
Because of the location, Mountain Pine Ridge is mostly inaccessible. However, a traveler determined to make the journey can arrive via horse, canoes or by walking.
A person can view the Thousand Foot Fall, the Actun Tunichil Muknal and/or the Barton Creek Cave. The Thousand Foot Fall is a cascading waterfall measuring over 1,500 feet while the Actun Tunichil Muknal is a series of caves found in the vicinity. The Barton Creek Cave is a site that houses a number of Mayan bones and shards of ancient pottery.
Other Mayan ruins can also be found in the Mountain Pine Ridge. The Caracol is has remained unexcavated. A visitor can view a number of structures situated throughout this Mayan settlement. Also of interest is the Chechem Ha. This cave is believed to have been the site of Mayan ceremonial activity.
Placenia. One of the top tourist destinations in Belize is Placenia. This southern town is renowned for its white beaches, crystal clear waters and its annual Lobster Fest activities.
There are a number of beach resorts located in Placenia. A vacationer can partake in a number of activities including fishing, swimming and jet skiing.
Animal lovers will enjoy the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to a number of exotic animals such as jaguars, ocelots and a variety of birds.
Belize¡¯s tourist industry is growing in leaps and bounds. A person traveling to the country will enjoy the beauty of its beaches and wildlife as well as appreciate the historical Mayan and present culture.
