Along Mexico¡¯s Caribbean coast sits a vacation oasis that is quickly gaining popularity amongst tourists. Once a playground mainly for Europeans on holiday, the Yucatan Peninsula (or Mexican Riviera) is home to many different vacation options. Here, you can choose to stay at one of the area¡¯s many all-inclusive resorts or one of the smaller, European style boutique hotels that dot the landscape. From families escaping the hustle and bustle of a chaotic life to couples looking for a romantic getaway for two, Mexico¡¯s Riviera Maya area has something to offer everyone.
Technically speaking, the Mayan Riviera is the area along the coast that stretches from Cancun south approximately 120 miles along the coast. Since the atmosphere in Cancun is so different from the vibe found in the Riviera Maya, it is not considered part of this region. The most popular areas along the coast of the Riviera Maya are Puerto Morales, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, and Tulum. Each is as unique as can be offering tourists a chance to experience many different vacations in one special place.
If you are looking for an authentically rustic Mexican experience away from the glitzy high-rises of Cancun, then Puerto Morales is right up your alley. While you won¡¯t find the super-mega-all-inclusive resorts here, you will find a quaint little town that was once a fishing village. If you decide to stay in Puerto Morales, then you¡¯ll want to check out the Presidente Intercontinental Paraiso de la Bonita Resort and Thalasso. This relatively small (only 90 suites) hotel is the ultimate in quiet relaxation. If you had more excitement in mind, then head a little further down the coast to Playa del Carmen, the liveliest stop along the coast. If you don¡¯t want to worry about anything except which bathing suit to put on in the morning, then consider one of Playa¡¯s many all-inclusive resorts. A popular, up-scale choice is the Occidental Royal Hideaway Playacar. Spoil yourself in the luxury of this beachfront all-inclusive resort. Give your wallet a rest because here you won¡¯t have to worry about paying for food and drinks as it¡¯s all included! Feel free to eat and drink yourself positively silly. Further down the coast is Puerto Aventuras, home to the Barcelo Maya beach resort. Another all-inclusive, Barcelo allows children providing an opportunity for the whole family to have fun together. If you really want to get away from it all then try Zamas in Tulum. Here you will find rustic beachfront cabanas (think wood plank floors and mosquito nets) perfect for relaxing.
The Riviera Maya is not unlike other popular tropical vacation destinations in that it has peak and off-peak seasons. Peak season runs from December through mid-April, when prices are at their highest. If you are interested in saving money on your Mexican vacation, then consider traveling during the ¡°off¡± months. The all-inclusive resorts can cost upwards of $400 a night, but may me worth it if you plan on drinking and eating a lot and don¡¯t want to have to worry too much about budgeting. If you are more adventurous and don¡¯t mind staying a few blocks from the beach, accommodations can be found for under $50 a night. It all depends on what your priorities are.
The average temperature along the Riviera Maya is a comfortable 78 degrees. During the heat of the day, temperatures can climb considerably and then fall at night. September through November are considered ¡°rainy season¡±. Even if you travel during one of these months, chances are good that you will still see the sun during your vacation. The weather changes quite easily so do not despair if it is overcast when you wake up or you get a few sprinkles in the late afternoon. There is a high probability that the sun will be shining again soon.
Pack light for your trip and make sure to leave room for plenty of souvenirs. Light, airy, breathable fabrics will serve you well in this climate. Be aware that some resorts have specific dress code requirements in certain restaurants but the vast majority of places are casual. Don¡¯t forget your flip-flops, sunscreen, sunglasses and best seller you¡¯ve been dying to finish. Have fun surrounded by the calming backdrop of the Riviera Maya. |
