Sport fishing is alive and well in Hawaii. The waters surrounding the islands that make up this area are full of fish such as Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin, Skipjack Tuna, Sailfish, Wahoo, Dolphin Fish, Yellowfin Tuna and Short-nosed Spearfish.

Blue Marlin, located at the top of the ocean¡¯s food chain, fears nothing, making an experienced crew important. If you are planning to land a big Blue Marlin, make sure you book a well-experienced crew.  Location of the fishing trip is also important when planning. Blue Marlin, Wahoo, Dolphin Fish, Yellowfin Tuna and Skipjack prefer deep blue water found at depths from the surface to 1,000 fathoms. Generally, the deeper the water the bigger the fish, but this is not always the case. The big fish do not always follow the rules and have been caught in shallower waters.

Hooking a massive Yellowfin tuna is an adventure in itself.  These fish dive deep and have long, fast runs that test both the angler and the tackle. Dolphin fish and Wahoo are both predators that are also fun to catch. Skipjack Tuna, even though not as big as the others are fearsome fighters just the same.

Fishing in Hawaii is often regulated by the seasons.  January and February finds the Marlin/Billfish season fading out while the Skipjack Tuna and Yellowfin Tuna beginning, with an occasional Dolphin fish. March to May find the Dolphin fish being more plentiful and are generally easy to catch every day. The Dolphin fish will begin this season weighing in the neighborhood of 10 pounds then will get larger, usually 20 to 30 pounds. During this time, Skipjack Tuna and Yellowfin Tuna are popular. June through August have schools of big Yellowfin Tuna, averaging 100 pounds arriving and being caught. During this time, more Wahoo are being caught along with Dolphin fish and the occasional large Marlin. September to December is prime time for Marlin/Billfish. The Marlin schools move into the area with average size being 120 to 180 pounds. Skipjack and Yellowfin Tuna are plentiful at this time as they are the favorite food of Marlin. The Yellowfin Tuna have now grown 40 to 50 pounds and offer a big fight on light tackle.

The Hawaiian Islands that offer fantastic sport fishing are Kauai, Kona, Maui, Oahu and Midway. Deep waters surround Kauai with massive cliff drop-offs located close to shore. Dolphin fish, Wahoo and Ahi can be caught at the sharp drop-offs with an occasional Marlin. With deep water so close to shore, the average time spent getting to the fishing area is about 10 minutes. Kauai offers fishing for everyone, especially if short trips, good fishing and a good chance at hooking a Marlin are what you are looking for. Kona, located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, has huge mountains and deep, calm, indigo colored water, which is 100 fathoms less than a mile and a half from the harbor.  Generally, the fishing here is seventy miles long and about twenty-five miles out. Very large Marlin have been caught in nearly every inch of this area and the fishing can take a short time or all day. Maui, which means the best in Hawaiian, could be used for the fishing here. Marlin are regularly caught here as well as providing great weather, great fishing conditions and great fishing. The fishing grounds are past the magnificent landmarks offered here, but the trip will only take 30-45 minutes. The fishing action will soon heat up as the boat is slowed to 8-9 knot plastic lure troll or slow live bait troll.  Oahu is often fished for big Marlin, Ahi, Dolphin Fish and Wahoo. The largest reported Marlin ever caught, 1805 pound blue, was caught off Oahu. Midway is the fartherest island in the Hawaiian chain. Midway offers a quality-fishing destination, knowledgeable and friendly skippers, clean, comfortable and well-equipped boats and a strong sense of proper ethics toward conservation. During the operating season, which is April through November, anglers can expect to catch Pacific Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Striped Marlin, Spearfish, Sailfish, Broadbill Swordfish, Ahi, Wahoo, and Dolphin fish.
