Salmon fishing is abundant on many of Alaska¡¯s lakes. This fishing is set amid hundreds of square miles of beauty only Alaska can deliver. Discover rolling forests, mountain meadows, hidden lakes, whispering streams, glaciers while fishing for five different species of salmon: Chinook (or King) Salmon, Chum (or Dog) Salmon, Coho (or Silver) Salmon, Pink (or Humpback) Salmon and Sockeye (or Red) Salmon.

Chinook or King Salmon fishing is best from about May 15 to July 15 with these fish averaging about 35 pounds with some ranging over 50 pounds. The first run of Chinook salmon enters the Kasilof River in mid-May. By mid-June, the Kenai River Chinooks migrate in full force and will continue through July until season ends July 31. The Kenai River is home to the world¡¯s largest salmon with the world record holder caught in 1985 weighing 97 pound 4 ounces. Fishing for Chinook salmon in Alaska gives everyone the opportunity to land the next world¡¯s record while having an unforgettable experience. 

Sockeye or Red salmon fishing is best from about July 15 to August 15. Once again, the Kenai River is the place to be. This species of salmon are found in record runs on the Kenai River. An 8 to 12 pound Sockeye salmon will get your adrenaline flowing as it grabs your hook and races across the river.

Coho or Silver salmon fishing is best from late July to early September. These salmon will weigh in the 7-9 pound range with a few weighing even more. These salmon also put up a good fight when hooked making them very exciting to catch. These salmon are found in the coastal water of Alaska from Southeast to Point Hope on the Chukchi Sea and the Yukon River to the Alaska-Yukon border. Being extremely adaptable, these salmon are found in almost all accessible bodies of fresh water. The Coho salmon is a premier sport fish that is taken in salt water by trolling with herring, or along shores with lures and flies.  When fishing for Coho salmon in fresh water use salmon eggs, flies, spoons or spinners. When one a Coho is hooked, expect a spectacular fight to ensure with many acrobatic moves.

Chum or Dog salmon fishing is best in the late summer. In the arctic, northwestern and Interior Alaska, this salmon is an important source of year-round fresh and dried fish. This salmon is used for subsistence and personal use purposes by Alaska¡¯s native peoples. Anglers fishing for other Pacific salmon in both salt water and fresh water often catch chum salmon accidentally. 

Pink or Humpback salmon fishing is best in late June to early September. Pink salmon is often called the ¡°bread and butter¡± fish of many Alaskan coastal fishing communities due to their importance in the commercial fishing industries of the area and thus the economy of the area. Pinks are also an excellent sport fish, often sought out by anglers.

Sockeye or Red salmon fishing is best from the end of July to early August. The largest harvest of sockeye salmon in the world occurs in the Bristol Bay area of southwestern Alaska. Large harvests of sockeye salmon in Prince William Sound and Chignik Lagoon are also often possible.
