If you¡¯re looking for the perfect place to spend a relaxing weekend consider Northeastern Connecticut.  Often refereed to as the Quiet Corner, this part of the state has many charming qualities to offer visitors whether they plan to spend merely the afternoon or the entire weekend.

For those who plan to spend the weekend, the area boasts several fine bed and breakfasts.  If you find yourself in Woodstock you can stay at the Mansion at Bald Hill where each room has its own bath.  If you¡¯d rather have something with more of a colonial flare why not try Elias Child House.  Although both locations are sure to please, they are not your only choices.  Perhaps you¡¯d rather stay in Putnam.  Here you¡¯ll find the Thurber House Bed and Breakfast, the former home of artist T. J. Thurber.  The town of Pomfret, located to the west of Putnam, also has its own bed and breakfasts to offer.  The Daniel Trowbridge House is a 1730¡¯s farmhouse located in Pomfret Center.  Also in Pomfret is Celebrations Inn, which was listed as the best bed and breakfast in New England in the 2005 Arrington¡¯s Inn Traveler Book of List.  But if you¡¯d rather stay in a more traditional motel than the Best Value Inn in Brooklyn, Connecticut is the place for you. Located conveniently near I-395 it is AAA approved and accepts major credit cards.

No visit to the Quiet Corner would be complete without a visit to historic downtown Putnam.  Known for its antiques' district, everyone is sure to find something they like.  For those who want a piece of the past, a stop in the Antiques Marketplace is an absolute must.  Connecticut¡¯s largest antiques mall, you¡¯ll find everything from 17th century furniture to 20th century toys all under one roof. Antiques Unlimited, located on Main Street, offers 18th, 19th, and 20th century furniture as well as fine sterling silver, fine art, and china.  Other antique stores that are sure to please include Palace Antiques, Grey Cane Rare Coins, RJB¡¯s Antiques and Collectibles, Pink House Antiques, and Little Museum Antiques Company.

Antiques not you thing?  Don¡¯t worry there are plenty of other stores to visit.  Creative Stritchery on Canal Street offers handcrafted stuffed animals, quilts, and other unique crafts.  Our Creative Corner, a store housed in the old Montgomery Ward building, offers original art and crafts created by local residents. You¡¯ll find beautiful stained glass items at Creative Cousins.  If you have the time you can even take a class.  Another creative stop is Tuffets Quilt Shop.  Here you can order specially made quilts, buy fabric to make your own, or just pick up some unique gifts.  If you leave the Putnam area and head into Woodstock, you can visit the Pottery Mill.  This store offers both pottery pieces as well as classes.  Next door to the Pottery Mill is the Scranton Shops where you¡¯ll find a mixture of antiques as well as handmade crafts and unique gifts.

Shopping isn¡¯t the only thing to do Putnam.  For those who enjoy spending time outside, stop by Cider Rides and rent a canoe or kayak for the afternoon.  Or take a walk or bike ride along the Putnam River Trail.  The Connecticut Audubon Center in Pomfret is another wonderful place to visit.  There you¡¯ll find trails and daily walks along the 700-acre sanctuary.  Maybe you¡¯d like to give horse back riding a try.  You¡¯ll find numerous riding stables in the area including the Woodstock Acres Riding Stables on Rock Hill Road and Hi Acres on Lyon Hill Road.

Is sightseeing more your idea of fun?  Then be sure to visit Thompson Common.  There you¡¯ll find beautiful historic homes.  While you¡¯re in the area visit the Quintessential Gardens at Fort Hill Farms.  Another must if you enjoy historic homes is Roseland Cottage in Woodstock. 

After a busy day of shopping and sightseeing you¡¯ll be ready for a tasty meal and the Quiet Corner has plenty places to eat.  Stoggy Hollow General Store and Restaurant in Woodstock serves great food for a very reasonable price Thursday through Sunday nights as well as lunch and breakfast everyday.  The Vanilla Bean in Pomfret service lunch and dinner every night as well as breakfast on the weekends.  It also provides live entertainment from time to time.  There are also many restaurants located right in Putnam such as the Courthouse Restaurant, Someplace Special, and Center Pizza.  For those who are looking for a more upscale dinner out, the area offers several choices such as the Harvest Inn in Pomfret, Lord Thompson Manner in Thompson, and The Inn at Woodstock Hill.
