Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, founded in 1842 by William Penn, is an excellent city to visit.  This east coast destination offers history, nature, commerce, and industry.  If you are planning a weekend trip to Philadelphia here is what you should plan on doing and seeing.

Philadelphia is associated strongly with American history because it is the birthplace of the nation.  Independence National historical Park is known as American¡¯s most historical square mile.  It was here where the Declaration of Independence was approved, where the U.S. Constitution was adopted, where Congress Hall, Old City Hall, and the Declaration House sit, and where, lastly, the Liberty Bell resides.  Old City, for all this history, is a must see for any visitor.  There are guided tours that you can sign up for at the tourist center, or you can grab a coffee and stroll along the grassy area looking at the colonial style buildings and reading the various informational plaques along the way.

After a tour of the historical area you may want to rest a while or enjoy a meal.  Society Hill, just north of the Liberty Bell, has a plethora of trendy cafes, restaurants, and bars, as well as nice boutique shops to frequent.  The cobblestone roads and hidden courtyards of the neighborhood give you a lot to explore as well. In addition, there are typically troupes of actors dressed in colonial garb that roam the area to answer your questions about how life was back in eighteenth century Philadelphia.  

Penn¡¯s Landing is a must see if you are in Philadelphia for the weekend.  Here you will find a vibrant waterfront with a thirty-seven acre long park that hosts concerts and theater in the summertime, an active night-life on South Street, the main drag, and numerous places to eat and shop near the water.  You will also find the Seaport Museum and several ships, including the USS Becuna, the USS Olympia, and the Gazela of Philadelphia.  You can catch a ferry to the New Jersey State Aquarium from Penn¡¯s Landing if you still haven¡¯t gotten your fill of maritime action.

Center City is Philly¡¯s business district.  Here you will find not only a gigantic statue of William Penn, but the boroughs of Chinatown and Rittenhouse Square.  The tall buildings that dominant the streets house literally thousands of offices and the streets are bustling at almost any hour of the day.  In Center City you can get a taste of culture as well.  Here you can visit the Academy of Music and Thomas Eakin¡¯s Jefferson University, which holds the famous painting of Eakin¡¯s himself, ¡°Gross Clinic¡±.  The shops at Liberty Place are great for souvenir shopping as well as clothes and gift shopping.  The Pennsylvania Convention center is located here as well.

Rittenhouse Square is one of the pretties of Philadelphia¡¯s public squares.  It is in the heart of the most expensive area of Philadelphia, the upper-north side.  Expensive hotels and swank restaurants adorn the square, and a small loft will put even the wealthiest of people out a few dollars.  The park is a great place to take a picnic basket or to stroll leisurely while looking at the beautiful people emerging from the various spots along the square. 

University City is the region of Philadelphia where University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, and several smaller colleges are located.  Grab a famous Philly cheesesteak  and wander through this center of academia. You will find one of the world¡¯s greatest collection of archaeology and anthropology at the University Museum.  If you aren¡¯t museum-ed out you can try the Contemporary Art Institute on the campus of the University.    

Germantown and Chestnut Hill are located north of Center City.  Here you will find a plethora of amazing homes.  Tours of these oldies but goodies can be taken, or you can navigate the neighborhood on your own at your own pace.  Manayunk is an old mill town that is located in between the Schuylkill River and the hills that abut Center City.  It is well known for its active nightlife, its bars, and restaurants.  If you are interested in the party scene, this is the place to go. 

If you still have time to spare take a drive out to Brandywine Valley and Valley Forge. The rolling hills are beautiful and the gorgeous homes in the area are impressive.  Valley Forge, the site of the famous 1777-78 encampment is a historical trip not to be missed.

Doing all of the above in one weekend can be a challenge, even for the ambitious.  Philadelphia offers enough to spend a week or two looking at, so do not get discouraged if you cannot fit it all into three days.
