Whether you head to the glitz and glamour of Atlantic City, towards the gentle hills of Amish Country, or to the alternative shopping and dining Mecca of New Hope in Bucks County, getting out of Philadelphia for a day can be fun and easy.
Atlantic City
With more than a dozen casinos, a nightlife sporting first-class entertainment, sumptuous spas, fine dining, great shopping and loads of fun attractions, Atlantic City offers a day-tripper a wide variety of options. Add the beach and the boardwalk into the mix and you just might make this easy one-hour trip out of the city more than once.
For those willing to test their luck, Atlantic City gambling halls offer almost every game you can think of ¨C blackjack, poker, roulette, craps, baccarat, keno, and of course the coin-hungry slot machines. The newest addition to Atlantic City, the stunning Borgata Casino Hotel & Spa is located in the marina district of Atlantic City. With 125,000 square feet of gaming pleasure (or pain, depending on Lady Luck), four entertainment venues (including the 1000-seat Music Box Theatre that books only big-name talent), a 50,000 square foot European-style spa (including a salon and barber shop), and more restaurant options than you could possibly imagine, this is one place you won¡¯t mind skipping the beach for.
If your luck runs out early, or you just need some fresh air, don¡¯t miss a stroll on the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk. Since opening in 1870, the boardwalk itself has seen many changes, but the sea breezes and spectacular view remain the same. Crunch on some Johnson¡¯s caramel popcorn, enjoy a Kohl¡¯s frozen custard, snag a slice of pizza, and then walk it off on the boards.
Pennsylvania Dutch Country
Lancaster County, about an hour-and-a-half west of Philadelphia, is the heart of picturesque Pennsylvania Dutch Country. The area offers a glimpse into the more simple life of the Amish and plain people communities. The Amish eschew such modern conveniences as cars and electricity, choosing instead to gently clip-clop down the road with their horses and buggies, and enjoy their evening meal by the soft glow of lanterns.
For an inside look at what life is like for an Amish family, you might consider taking one of a number of house or farmland tours. Amish Experience Homestead, Amish Farm & House, and Amish Village all offer house tours, while Amish Country Tours, Old Order Amish Tours, and Mennonite Information Center focus on farmland tours.
Buggy rides are also available: call Abe¡¯s Buggy Rides, Aaron and Jessica¡¯s Buggy Rides, or AAA Buggy Rides for more information.
New Hope
Nestled along the Delaware River approximately 50 minutes north of Philadelphia, New Hope is a village that is both charming and chic. Take a ride on a mule-powered barge, wander along the main streets and tucked-away cobblestone passageways, enjoy fine or fast dining, and shop ¡®til you drop at more than 100 unique stores ¨C however you chose to spend your day in New Hope, you won¡¯t soon forget it. Art and craft galleries abound here ¨C you will find everything from fine jewelry and ceramics to funky glass and functional art.
December visitors will see New Hope magically transformed into an enchanted Christmas village, with its streets lined with white lights and candles. Visitors during the spring and summer can look forward to a number of fun outdoor activities, including the unique Lambertville Shad Festival (usually held in April) a combination arts & crafts festival and riverside shad cookout. Lambertville is located on the New Jersey side of the Delaware River, just a 5-minute stroll across the bridge from downtown New Hope. |
