Whether you are a single business traveler or a tourist on your own, there are so many fun things to do alone in the City of Brotherly Love.
Below are some ideas:
Sightseeing
Philadelphia is rich with history. Start at Independence Mall (6th & Market Streets), the center of Philadelphia's historical district. Tour Independence Hall, gaze at the Liberty Bell, walk through the Betsy Ross House, and explore the National Constitution Center.
Then head down to South Street (from the Delaware waterfront west to 8th Street), grab a table for one at a sidewalk cafe, and catch up on your people-watching. Brimming with hip shops and hip people, South Street is Philadelphia's answer to New York's Greenwich Village.
If you have a car, there is more to see out in Philadelphia's diverse suburbs. Head west on I-76 to Gulph Road and tour Valley Forge National Historical Park, the site of the famous winter encampment by George Washington's Continental Army.
On Route 1 in Kennett Square is Longwood Gardens, 1,050 acres of beautifully landscaped horticultural displays. Walk through the gardens and maybe catch a fountain show choreographed to music.
Museums
Some of the best museums in the world are in Philadelphia. Start at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (26th & Benjamin Franklin Parkway) where you'll see such famous works as Picasso's "Three Musicians" and Poussin's "The Birth of Venus". Then work your way down the Parkway, and stop at the Rodin Museum (22nd & Parkway) for more art, the Franklin Institute (20th & Parkway) for a dose of science, and the Academy of Natural Science (19th & Parkway) to see the dinosaur exhibit and other ancient artifacts.
Parks
Spend some time relaxing in Love Park (15th & JFK Boulevard) or walk, jog, rollerblade, or bicycle through the city's 4,100-acre Fairmount Park (Kelly Drive along the Schuylkill River). Stop off at the Philadelphia Zoo (34th & Girard Avenue), and explore the oldest zoological garden in the U.S.
Shopping
The Philadelphia area is a shopper's paradise. The Rittenhouse Square area (18th & Market Streets) is lined with upscale shops and boutiques. For those who like to explore indoor shopping malls, The Gallery (9th & Market Streets) is the largest retail complex in downtown Philadelphia, with one million square feet of department stores, specialty shops, and eateries. Also visit the Shops at Liberty Place (17th & Chestnut) for over 60 shops located in Philadelphia's first skyscraper.
If you have a car, drive out to King of Prussia (I-76 west to Mall Boulevard) for the largest shopping mall on the east coast. The Plaza and its next-door neighbor, The Court, offer 365 specialty shops and 40 restaurants and eateries.
If you enjoy outlet shopping, the Franklin Mills Mall in northeastern Philadelphia (just off of I-95 at Woodhaven and Knights Roads) features hundreds of brand-name outlet stores including Ann Taylor, Polo Ralph Lauren, Aerosoles, Reebok, and Banana Republic. And here is a bonus for Philly area shoppers: no sales tax on clothing in Pennsylvania!
Winery Tours
Wine connoisseurs can take a short drive out to Chadds Ford (Route 1, just south of Route 202) in the beautiful and historic Brandywine Valley and tour the Chaddsford Winery. After the tour, go to the tasting room to sample their latest wines, and then visit their shop. Purchase a bottle or two to take home with you.
Dining
Philadelphia is a renowned restaurant town, and Philadelphia restaurants are very happy to accommodate single diners. For upscale dining, try any of the posh restaurants lining Rittenhouse Square (18th & Walnut Streets). For a more casual setting, choose any of the unique eateries along South Street's famous strip (from the Delaware waterfront west to 8th Street). Bring a book or magazine for a leisurely meal, or just sit back and enjoy the scenery.
Music and Movies
From the classical to the hip, the arts in Philadelphia offer something for everyone, including single folks on their own.
Hear the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Kimmel Center (Broad & Spruce Streets), or catch a ballet or an opera at the Academy of Music (15th & Locust Streets). For a more casual evening of music, head out to the North Star Bar (27th & Poplar Streets) for some live rock, or catch a local singer/songwriter at the Tin Angel (20 South 2nd Street).
Movie buffs have plenty of options to choose from in Philadelphia. Philly's chain movie houses, like the United Artists Riverview Stadium 17 (1400 S. Columbus Boulevard) and the United Artists Main Street 6 (3720-40 Main Street in the Manayunk section), offer current mainstream films. For those with more eclectic tastes, the Ritz Five (214 Walnut Street), the Ritz East (2nd Street between Chestnut and Walnut), and the Ritz Bourse (4th Street above Chestnut) offer a variety of art-house films. You can also catch an IMAX film at the Tuttleman IMAX Theater at the Franklin Institute (20th & Benjamin Franklin Parkway).
