The Perfect Campsite

One of the things I hear most often from beginning campers is that they¡¯re not sure what to look for in a campsite, or that they picked a campsite, but were unhappy with it later. If this sounds like you, keep reading for tips on how to pick the perfect campsite.

First, to clarify, this article is intended for families or individuals who car camp with a tent. This means that they load up the car with tent, chairs, and other equipment, then drive to the campground. Backpackers and RVers face completely different options and complications when choosing a campsite.

Pick a Good Campground

To find a good campsite, it¡¯s important that you¡¯re starting with a good campground. In general, state parks offer great campgrounds. Some private campgrounds are great, as well, but many private campgrounds are set up for RV campers and make less-than-ideal locations for tent campers.

A good campground generally looks ¡°natural.¡± If it¡¯s in a woodsy area, the campground has trees and has not been cleared of trees. There is grass and only as much pavement as needed.

The Campsite

Some marks of a good campsite include:

Grass: A good campsite will be grassy. (Unless, of course, you¡¯re on a beach or other area devoid of grass.) Large patches of dirt are usually undesirable, since these will become large patches of mud if it rains.

Level: A level campsite is desirable for several reasons. First, in the event of rain, a level campsite means even drainage. A campsite with low spots could quickly become a campsite with its own private lake. Additionally, a level campsite means that you¡¯ll sleep better ¨C your head and your feet will be roughly the same level. 

Tent pad: Some campgrounds provide tent pads, which are essentially designated areas of the campsite for your tent. A pad is nice, but not required. The pad is usually made of sand or mulch that is spread out to be level and drain well.

Shade: A perfect campsite will afford you with some shade. A few trees will provide you with a break from the pounding sun.

Privacy: A perfect campsite will provide you with some privacy. Some campgrounds merely provide tent campers with an open, grassy field. This can be acceptable, but everyone who is camping can see what everyone else who is camping is doing at any given moment. Perfect campsite are surrounded with trees or bushes such that each campsite is its own little area, partially shut off from the rest of the campers.

No Stagnant Water: Stagnant water is a breeding ground for insects, and also smells pretty bad. Investigate the immediate area surrounding the campsite for ponds or large puddles.

Secluded: Each camper is seeking a different level of seclusion. In general, if you don¡¯t want lots of traffic walking or driving by your site, try to avoid campsites located adjacent to entrances and exits, water fountains, garbage dumps, or restrooms.

Moving water: While not every campground will be situated along a creek, river, or lake, if you are visiting a campground that is, obtaining a site that allows you to see and hear the water can be very relaxing.

Bathrooms: Unless you want constant foot traffic by your site, do not choose a site next to the bathrooms. But if you¡¯re likely to want to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, pick a site that is reasonably close to the bathrooms.
