Planning an overseas trip is a challenging task when you're trying to foresee all contingencies. After all, you'll be away from home for some time and may encounter a variety of situations where you can't telephone a friend or relative for help, so it's important to go prepared.

It may be helpful to write a packing list several weeks before your departure. Cross things off as you bundle them into luggage, and add new things as they come to mind. After everything is packed, double-check to be sure you haven't forgotten anything. Pack light, if possible, since it will be easier to look after two bags than five at airport terminals and in hotel rooms. 

Prepare a list of your medical conditions and prescription medications. That way, if something should happen, you have a written document that can be used in an emergency. Take a copy of your immunization record as well so that you won't have to undergo needless shots if you already have them, with proof to show for it. 

Find out what the weather conditions are expected to be like. Then you can pack accordingly, without taking extra items that may never be worn. Ask about laundry facilities and pack a laundry bag for used clothing. Take things that can be folded and stored easily without wrinkling. 

Take along a personal directory or a list of telephone numbers or contact information for family members or friends in case something happens to you. No one wants to consider this possibility, of course, but one never knows. Foreign officials need to know what to do if you become ill or are involved in an accident. 

It may help to print a copy of your itinerary if you plan to visit more than one place. That way, if you get confused about flight numbers, boarding gates, or other travel information, especially when attempting to communicate in another language, you will have the preside details at your fingertips.

Keep important documents in a safe place. These include your passport with a visa, driver's license, transportation tickets, medical record, birth and marriage certificates, and insurance information. You may want to take duplicates and keep one set in your luggage and another in your purse or a pocket. 

Visit the foreign currency department of your bank or financial institution to get bills and coins in the currency of the countries you plan to visit. You may want to take some American money as well in case you need to purchase something while in transit. It's a good idea to take an American Express card or another credit card for emergency purchases if your traveler's checks or foreign currency is lost or stolen.

Traveling to another land provides an exciting opportunity to learn about other people and places. Be prepared in anticipating possible needs so that you will not be unduly delayed. Consult a travel agency or visit online sites about your intended destination to learn more about how you can prepare to have a wonderful time.
