It can be fairly said that Orange County, California has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States if not the world. While some of the tourist attractions are well known, there are lesser known attractions that can offer an individual or family on vacation just as much fun and fond memories.

The crown jewel of visitor destinations is, of course, Disneyland in Anaheim. It is the must see location in Orange County. The park is busy all year round, and while the rides are some of the best designed and the ambience of the park can¡¯t be beat, the long lines, crowded shops, and jostling crowds can lead to aggravation. Disney has diversified in the last few years. In addition to the main park, there is now Disney¡¯s California Adventure, designed as a charming salute to all things California. Advantages to this location include much less crowds than the parent park and a greater likelihood of bargain tickets being available. In addition to California Adventure, Disney has added a great outdoor shopping and restaurant mall called Downtown Disney, which has all the charm and energy one expects of a Disney attraction, but offers a great shopping destination for out- of-towners. 

Just down the street from Disneyland is the home of the 2002 World Series Champions, the Anaheim Angels.  The team is a proven winner and the stadium is one of the more family-friendly locations in major league baseball.  A few blocks from the Angels is the Arrowhead Pond, home of the 2003 Stanley Cup Runner-Ups, the Mighty Ducks.

Slightly less famous but still a great draw for visitors to Orange County is Knott¡¯s Berry Farm. It has much of the charm of Disneyland but is more fairly priced and generally less crowded. There are many charming shops directly outside of Knott¡¯s and some wonderful eateries and candy emporiums. Knott¡¯s Berry Farm¡¯s fried chicken has to be tasted to be believed.

Knott¡¯s also has the advantage of being centrally located to some other prime tourist locations. Just up the street are the following tourist locations: Movieland Wax Museum, and the Medieval Times Dinner Theatre. Medieval times is a little pricey for what you get, but if you have a hankering for serving wenches and love to eat with your fingers while watching some exciting sword play, it can¡¯t be beat. Beach Blvd, where Knott¡¯s is located is also the location of Adventureland Theme park, a smaller kiddie ride destination for the more budget-minded tourist.

If peace and quiet are on your agenda while in Orange County, there are some wonderful parks to be recommended. Huntington Beach Central Park is one of the prettiest locations in the County. There are acres of tree-lined paths to walk, lakes for fishing, and an 18-hole Frisbee golf course. Irvine Park in the Orange Hills has a lake for recreation, a wonderful scale steam train, pony rides for the kids, and even its own zoo.   

Further down in South Orange County is the Mission at San Juan Capistrano.  The mission was built in 1776 and is considered to be one of the more beautiful missions in the state. 

Orange County can boast of most famous and infamous native, Richard Milhous Nixon.  His birthplace and presidential library is located in the city of Yorba Linda.  The library is a rich testament to his political legacy that incorporates multimedia presentations and authentic artifacts from the various phases of Nixon¡¯s career.  Also located on the grounds are the Nixon Family Farmhouse and the final resting places of the former president and his wife.

A tour of Orange County would not be complete without stopping at the ultimate shopping meccas of the county¡¯s well-to-do, South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa and Newport Fashion Island in Newport Beach.  South Coast Plaza and Fashion Island have the some of the more high-end shopping chains in Southern California, such as Nordstroms, Gucci, and Saks Fifth Avenue.  If you¡¯re lucky enough to visit Fashion Island during the Christmas holidays, you will see the largest Christmas tree west of the Rockies on display.

If the OC is famous for anything other than Disneyland it is probably for its wonderful beaches. Huntington Beach has become a famous surf Mecca throughout the world. In addition to its killer waves, the beach has an easy going charm which should make most visitors feel right at home. Just remember to put on your sun block before you get too cozy. Newport Beach also has its charm. There is the wonderful Balboa fun zone, filled with arcades, ice cream and all the frozen bananas a person can stomach. Hop a ride on the auto ferry and you can visit wonderful, charming Lido Isle. Its tree lined streets are the perfect place to stroll in your topsiders and shorts. Just remember sun glasses are not optional!

The tourist in Orange County is presented with an array of choices that could make anyone¡¯s head spin. But you know you have chosen the right vacation destination when you have too much to do instead of not enough. Orange County has a wonderful mix of slow paced or fast paced attractions, suitable for any tourist personality. And remember if you find you have crammed too much action into too few days Orange County will always welcome you back with open arms. Or you can always let your boss know you won¡¯t be back on Monday after all!
