Alabama is known as the ¡°Heart of Dixie¡±. It is, indeed, the heart of the South. From the foothills of the Smokey Mountains to the majestic Tennessee River, north Alabama has so many fun activities for families to enjoy.
Northeast Alabama is home to the foothills of the Smokey Mountains. Lookout Mountain, which begins in the northeastern section of the state, is also home to a ski and golf resort. While that might sound like a contrast in activities, Mentone, Alabama does offer both of these activities. Because weather is typically milder for a longer period of time in Alabama, golf is a popular sport year round, and there are many golf resorts located in north Alabama. However, Mentone¡¯s Cloudmont Ski and Golf Resort also offers southerners a chance to try out their skiing abilities without straying too far from home. The resort makes its own snow when the overnight temperature is at least 28 degrees. It is open daily, weather permitting.
Enjoying the Lookout Mountain area of Alabama on horseback is easy when you visit the Shady Grove Dude Ranch, also near Mentone. Visitors have the opportunity to take on the role of a real cowboy. There are numerous trails available for you to explore, and the views from atop the mountain are breathtaking. Little River Canyon, near Fort Payne, Alabama, is one of the Southeast¡¯s deepest canyons. It is formed by the country¡¯s longest mountaintop river. The river is considered one of the most pristine and wildest waters in the South. You can take a scenic drive around the canyon, mountain climb its sheer cliffs, hike the surrounding forest, or kayak the river.
If shopping is your passion, then you must plan a visit to the Unclaimed Baggage Center of Scottsboro, Alabama. Shopping enthusiasts all over the South flock to this mega bargain store to hunt through the over 7,000 stocked unclaimed items. You can find everything from cameras, Walkmans, and books to camping equipment, computer software, dishes and clothes for the whole family, and all at rock bottom prices.
As you make your way towards Huntsville, Alabama, a huge rocket fills the skyline. The Huntsville Space and Rocket Center, a division of NASA, is home to an astounding space museum and Imax Theater. You can see actual rockets and space shuttles, experience the thrill of space rides, such as Space Shot, and play interactive space program games. Space Camp attracts young people from all over the country and the world. The Space Camp program is set up for children to come and stay for lengths of time. They live in space shuttle-like dorms, and their days are filled with space missions and experiments.
Huntsville is also home to Big Spring Jam, which attracts famous musical acts. This music festival spans a weekend, and at any given period, tourists are entertained by big name musical groups and solo artists. Northwest Alabama is also home to several festivals that attract thousands of visitors from all over the country. Tuscumbia, Alabama is the home of Helen Keller¡¯s birthplace, and every June, the city celebrates and honors their former famous native with a huge festival. Florence, Alabama is the birthplace of jazz great, W. C. Handy, and the streets come alive in August with the sounds of jazz, blues, gospel, and many other musical genres.
The Muscle Shoals area of Alabama, which is home to Tuscumbia, Sheffield, and Muscle Shoals, has been known as one of the major recording capitals of the world. World famous Fame Studios has recorded many major recording stars over the years. The Alabama Music Hall of Fame, located in Tuscumbia, gives visitors a chance to discover the rich musical history of the area.
Because the Tennessee River separates the city of Florence from the Muscle Shoals area, the river plays a major role in entertainment throughout the year. Major fishing tournaments are hosted here, and the beautiful weather makes fishing year round a possibility. There are areas to camp in and parks to visit along the river, and plenty of places to just stop and throw your hook into the water.
Finally, the memorial Trail of Tears ride culminates during the fall in nearby Waterloo, Alabama, which is a small community that sits beside the Tennessee River. The Trail of Tears commemorates the terrible path on which many Native Americans traveled and an estimated 4000 lost their lives as they were rounded up and driven from their homes during the 1800s. North Alabama is a wonderful place for families to visit. With its beautiful weather, a majestic river, and breathtaking views, families can find fun activities to enjoy year round.
