The city of Norfolk, Virginia, is a thriving city in the heart of the Southern Virginia area called ¡°Hampton Roads¡±. Though Hampton Roads includes nearby cities such as Suffolk, Newport News, Virginia Beach and others, Norfolk has emerged as the cultural and historical jewel of the group, and deservedly so. No matter what your hobbies or interests are, you will find plenty to occupy your time in Norfolk.

Whether you are a historical scholar or a more casual history buff, Norfolk has so much to offer you may need to extend your trip! The city is over 400 years old (established in 1607) and many of the historical sites are very well-preserved! Some of the most popular are the Civil War Trails, which aim to preserve some of the sites that were of significance during the war. The Trails flow throughout the entire state, but two of the most significant spots are right in the heart of Norfolk. One is the Black Civil War Memorial, which is still the only memorial to African-Americans who served during the war in the entire South. The other is Fort Norfolk, which is the oldest-standing army Fort in the entire country. The Trails are well-marked and easily accessible since the city is very pedestrian-friendly (crosswalks, bike and hiking trails abound). 

If you are a history buff who brought their children along, you may think that you won¡¯t be able to see any museums, but Norfolk actually has one of the best compromises you will ever find. Nauticus is the National Maritime Museum, which has dozens of activities from educational films about the sea to shark petting! Encased in it is the Hampton Roads Naval Museum. Right outside is the USS Wisconsin, an actual battleship that is the last (and largest) of its kind that the Navy ever built. You could spend an entire day here, and everybody would find something to make them happy.

If you prefer more traditional museums, you are still in luck. The Hermitage Foundation Museum, the Hunter House Victorian Museum and Moses Myers House all have paintings and artifacts from turn-of-the-century Norfolk. They also showcase the varied architecture that is a hallmark of the city- everything from Romanesque to Victorian ideals. The Chrysler Museum of Art contains over 30,000 pieces of art dating back up to 5000 years, and also has a theater that holds plays and lectures year-round. 

Situated in downtown Norfolk, The Douglas MacArthur Memorial is one of the biggest attractions in the city. It is a part of the newly-restored 1850 City Hall area and is the final resting place of the renowned General and his wife. The complex is huge and includes a restaurant, art gallery, theater, archives, and artifacts from five different wars. A visit to Norfolk will not be the same without a stop here.

But history is not the only thing to be had in Norfolk. The reemergence of the area simply known as ¡°The Waterfront¡± offers a variety of things to do. The focal points are the Elizabeth River and Hampton Roads Harbor. Everything from romantic clipper ship sunset sails for two to do-it-yourself paddle boats for families are up for rent somewhere along The Waterfront. Town Point Park has many concerts and cultural events year-round. Nearby is Harbor Park, a baseball stadium that is home to the Norfolk Tides, an affiliate of the New York Mets. Dotted along this area are some great restaurants with a variety of menus and ethnicities. The most popular is of course seafood restaurants, since the city is mere minutes from the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The biggest attraction on The Waterfront is the Spirit of Norfolk, the largest cruise ship in Southern Virginia, which has daily cruises with entertainment and food. In the Waterfront Mall there are a variety of stores to go along with the nightclubs and bars if you are into the nightlife scene. 

As you can see, there is something for everybody in the ever-emerging Norfolk. Whether you came alone, with family or for a convention, your to-do list may exceed the amount of time you have. Even so, when you hit the airport or the highway, you are likely to do so with some very fond memories.
