One of the hardest, most irritating undertakings for a woman is shopping for a new pair of jeans. It is inevitable that there will not be a single pair that fits in all of the right places and quite possible that the frustration involved will cause her to leave the store empty-handed.
The following guide to modern cuts and washes of jeans will help ease some of the annoyance and confusion involved in trying to separate one pair of jeans from another:
The Cuts
Bootcut: One of the more popular styles of jeans, this type can be found almost anywhere. They sit low on the waist and have a slim fit through the upper leg. They have a slight flare from the knee to the ankle, giving them their name. They are quite versatile; whether you want to pair them with boots, a chunky heel, or a pair of sandals, boot cut jeans compliment any outfit.
Flared: This trendy style is most popular with younger women. They, too, sit low on the waist and are slim through the thigh and knee, though they have a wider flare than the bootcut. These jeans spread out dramatically toward the ankle, often resembling bellbottoms.
Slim: This style fits close through the backside and thigh and through to the ankle where it is slightly tapered. These jeans do not have much stretch or loose fabric.
Straight Leg: This style fits straight through the leg. These jeans are neither too tight nor too loose. Instead, they fit quite comfortably and have a classic look and feel. The waist on these is generally higher than the lower-waisted bootcut and flared jeans.
Cuffed or Cropped: A recent trend in jeans is to wear them a few inches above the ankle. Whether you buy them cropped or roll them up yourself, this style can be a fun way to wear jeans on warmer days with a pair of sandals or flip flops. They generally are slim or slightly loose throughout the leg, without much of a flare at the bottom.
The Washes
Sand blasted: This popular wash is actually made using sand particles that wear away part of the surface and color of the jeans, creating a softer, more broken-in look. These jeans will appear slightly faded and as though they have been worn for some time, all the while creating a trendy look.
Whisker Wash: This wash involves bleach marks (usually right below the front pockets on the upper thigh) that resemble "whiskers¡±. They are normally on darker jeans and can make any outfit look a little funkier.
Tinted: These jeans are sand blasted and have a slight coloring added to them, usually a soft beige or yellow. They are made to look worn-in and to add a little shading to spice up regular denim.
Dark: These jeans are a dark blue, almost black. They are great for making legs appear slimmer, as well as for pairing with some heels and wearing out.
Hopefully, this guide has made the prospect of shopping for jeans a little less intimidating. It's time to throw out the stonewashed, tapered jeans in the back of your closet and go out and get a hip new pair!
