Upon the untimely death of Dior, Saint Laurent took over as the haute couture designer of his fashion house. Not to disappoint his mentor, Saint Laurent kept in line with Dior¡¯s vision and created the Trapeze collection, which was an immediate success. It was not until 1962 that Saint Laurent opened his own fashion house to create a fashion legacy that would withstand the test of time.
During the course of Yves Saint Laurent¡¯s career, he continued to produce groundbreaking designs and pushed the envelope in the realm of couture. His most notable works include a wide array of feminized menswear such as pantsuits, bolero jackets, pea coats, safari jackets and the famous ¡°Le Smoking¡± tuxedo jacket. Saint Laurent tends to make women¡¯s daywear exude masculine qualities while his eveningwear fantastically flatters femininity. In doing so, he remains cognizant of female beauty by utilizing methods of classic cuts and tailoring to create impressive smocks as well as suggestive peasant and see-through blouses.
From his early design days to the present, his innovative designs still preserve thematic elements of various ethnicities. His utilization of bright colors serves as a complementary contrast to the basic black that are in many of his collections. Saint Laurent has served as a pioneer to many popular trends such as the ¡°beatnik look¡± that emerged in the 1960¡¯s and 1970¡¯s. Defined by tweed suits, form-fitting pants and tall boots, the popular look was only one of Saint Laurent¡¯s many accomplishments.
In 1966, Saint Laurent continued to consciously spread his artistic wings by venturing outside of the world of haute couture by not only producing a pr¨ºt a porter line, but also developing comic strips as well doing extensive set and costume design for various film and theatre productions. In 1971, he continued his bouts of shock and unexpected action, when he introduced his ¡°40¡¯s¡± collection in an ad for ¡°Pour Hommes¡±, his first men¡¯s cologne. The controversial advertising campaign featured Saint Laurent nude and caused many jaws to drop in the fashion critic world.
As Saint Laurent¡¯s career moved at a steady pace in men¡¯s and women¡¯s fashions, he started to open boutiques all over the world. In 1996, he continued to impress in the world of couture by becoming the first fashion designer to broadcast his show on the Internet. In addition to this landmark achievement, he also made an effort to casually stray away from the big fashion shows in the realm of haute couture and focus on his ready-to-wear collections.
Saint Laurent¡¯s revolutionary career has made a permanent mark on the world of fashion. His remarkable talent has earned him numerous amounts of regard. In 1983, He was the first designer to be honored by the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York and in 1999 he was dubbed with the Lifetime Achievement award courtesy of The Council of Fashion Designers of America.
Although Gucci purchased the YSL label in 1999, Saint Laurent remained the designer for the haute couture collection while Tom Ford designed ready-to-wear. In 2002 the Saint Laurent and his label began to undergo an extreme amount of unfortunate circumstances that prompted the legendary fashion house to close its doors. The YSL fashion empire still resonates through Gucci, but those illustrious initials that adorn his clothing still give Yves Saint Laurent the esteem he deserves as one of the most significant fashion designers of our time.
