It is time once again for a current family portrait. You have already bribed the kids, sweet talked your spouse, and picked out color coordinated outfits for your family. Now, all you have to do is choose a portrait studio. Here are some tips to help you make the best choice for your family:
-Most studios display their work. Visit each studio and look over their samples so you can make sure the quality of their portraits is what you expect. Are the portraits properly centered? How is the lighting? Are the colors strong and vivid?
-Ask to check out the backgrounds before scheduling an appointment, and find out if you will be able to choose the background you prefer. Some studios offer package deals that only allow for specific backgrounds, so this is a good thing to be aware of in advance. Knowing what the background looks like will also help you decide how your family should dress for the portrait.
-Cost is an important part of the decision when choosing a portrait studio. Ask about sitting fees and any other fees that might be incorporated into a portrait package. Some companies charge sitting-fees in addition to the package price. The rate can be anywhere from one dollar to several dollars for each person included in the portrait, which can add up quickly. Other fees might be included for changes in background or poses, or for incorporating props into the photo. Also, be sure to find out how much extra photos cost in advance, as there may be a pose that looks great but is not included in the package deal. You will be disappointed if you cannot afford to purchase that perfect picture, so be aware of the prices ahead of time.
-Find out if you will be able to review the proofs and choose the photos that you want. Studios usually choose which photos will be in the package and charge extra for the rest. Less than reputable studios may include only the worst photos in the package, so you will be forced to purchase extra pictures at an inflated rate, to get a good portrait. Studios that will let you pick out the photos you want should be at the top of your list.
-Select a package that meets your family¡¯s needs. Are there plenty of pictures in sizes you want? Some package deals make big claims of offering over fifty pictures. This might be a good deal, or it might mean that you will receive twenty-five tiny charm size photos. Not many families want or need that many miniature photos. Instead, you would probably rather have twenty-five wallet size photographs to share with extended family members, so make sure the package you choose offers plenty of pictures in sizes that you can use.
-Make sure the availability of the photographer corresponds with your schedule, and that the studio has appointments available at times that are convenient for you. Trying to have a portrait made during the baby¡¯s nap time, or when your children¡¯s stomachs are grumbling in anticipation of supper, is not conducive to smiling faces and quality family portraits. |
