Environmentally conscious designers Genevieve Gaelyn and Atom Cianfarani take a rare and different approach to fashion. Together, these designers strive to create clothes from non-traditional nature based fabrics to help preserve natural resources.
Before the women became the faces of rubber inspired fashion, Genevieve Gaelyn worked as a costume designer learning that anything can be used as fabric. She also worked at San Francisco¡¯s Stormy Leather fetish boutique before working in New York¡¯s Baroness, where she was as a latex production manager. Atom Cianfarani worked in furniture design using recyclable material before she joined Genevieve. Having the same passion and interest in preserving the environment, in 1999, the two women got together and stated their fashion line in New York City. It was in the city¡¯s 2002 fashion week show that their threads debuted.
Since then, they have been known for their innovative way of incorporating recycled bicycle tubes into most of their designs ranging from pants to dresses calling it ¡®couture with a cause¡¯. Sap from a rubber tree is what makes latex and rubber possible. On any given year, they use an average of 80,000 inner bicycle tubes, which is equivalent to one ton of rubber. Saving the planet from landfills overflowing with rubber, Gaelyn and Cianfarani have successfully been able to take the rubber tubes from Recycle a Bicycle, a New York based non-profit company which refurbishes and sells used bicycles, and transform them into fabric to create fashionable pieces.
Gaelyn and Cianfarani¡¯s designs have been chosen by international superstars to be worn to many award shows as well as on various fashion magazines. Due to its fineness and durability, their signature latex fabric is usually mistaken for leather. They have even admitted to having incorporated remaining scraps from one design into their next so that nothing is wasted. Gaelyn and Cianfarani both feel and want their fashion to empower those who wear it by knowing that not only is each design unique and tailored on an individual basis, but that by simply wearing their designs they are giving back to the environment.
The signature looks of Gaelyn and Cianfarani span in colors from black latex jumpsuits to turquoise chiffon spring dresses. The do not limit themselves to only black latex designs but incorporate bright colors, such as pink and peach, into their latex fabric. Many of their looks sport v-necks and plunging necklines with the latex fabric used to accent colors.
In 2004, the Human Society of the United States, whose goal is to create a world of human compassion for animals, recognized the two designers for their animal rights work. They were awarded with the debut trophy for their conscious raising designs at HSUS¡¯s First Annual Compassion in Fashion Expo, an event intended to encourage designers to seek alternatives to leather, fur, and animal derived materials.
In addition to their efforts to give back to the environment, Gaelyn and Cianfarani also love to give back to the community by becoming mentors to design student from the Parson¡¯s School of Design.
These fashion forward designers are trend setters in their own right showing other designers that good fashion does not have be detrimental to the environment.
