Planning a wedding on a budget, but want to make it as decorative as possible? It's not difficult if you make your own decorations, and one of the easiest to make is a wedding bell.
Anyone can buy those honeycomb bells, but hand-made ones can seem much richer. The easiest bells to make are from aluminum foil, and with all the colors of foil out these days, you don't need to stick to silver. If you decide to use silver, however, there are various forms of foil, from matte finish, to textured, to quilted. You can also quilt or stuff your own.
For materials you'll need aluminum foil, string, scissors, glue, a pencil and disposable diapers or diaper pads. These are optional and will be used for padding.
Draw and cut out bell shapes from various sizes and pieces of cardboard. Make your bells all different sizes for an interesting effect. Cut out diaper pieces a slight bit smaller than the cardboard bell. Cut out two aluminum foil shapes an inch or two larger than the cardboard.
Glue the diaper pieces to the cardboard. If you're not having puffy bells, omit this step as well as all the steps involving diapers. Take one piece of aluminum foil and wrap it around one side of the cardboard and diaper. Fold the foil over the other side of the bell, and glue it down in various spots or all along the edge. Repeat the steps with other bells while the first construction is drying. When the glue has set, poke a hole in the top of the bell and run a long piece of string through it, approximately the length from the ceiling to seven feet off the floor. You don't want people hitting their heads on them at the reception. Knot the string to the bell so it can't come off. Then take your other piece of aluminum foil and fold over the other side of the bell, carefully pressing down the seam. The string will be enclosed inside this seam, as the rest of the bell will be. Glue down this entire edge, being careful not to let the glue spill out onto the foil. If it leaks, use a soft cloth or tissue to remove the excess. Have your hanging strings be all different lengths so the bells will not all hang at the same length.
Bells can also be fastened to the front of the bridal table. In this case, the strings can be kept the same length.
In addition to foil, you can used various colors of tissue paper for the bells, and construct them the same way.
For a fancier effect, you can purchase inexpensive silk flowers, and glue or baste them to the outside of the bell. Colors can match the colors in the wedding party.
For three-dimensional bells, you can use Styrofoam egg cartons and carefully cut the egg shape holder from the carton. Trim the edges with flowers or fancy rick-rack or seam binding and poke a hole through the center of the egg edge to put a string so you can hang these bells as well. Egg cartons come in pink, yellow, green, blue and white, so you could use them for assorted colored "bells."
If you have extra money and want to make some elaborate decorations, you can purchase the honeycomb bells and put them in the center of some silk flowers for a lovely floral centerpiece featuring bells.
