Weddings are special occasions, and wedding couples should have special gifts.  Even though the couple you want to present with a gift may have registered for a list of items they need and want at various shops, using your imagination and creativity to make a wedding gift basket can make the most ordinary gift seem unique.  Running the gamut from inexpensive to elaborate, gift baskets can help you present your gift in a distinctive light.

There are many different ways to design a wedding gift basket, and choosing a theme will help the basket have a unified appearance.  Presumably, you know the couple and have an idea of their tastes; if you¡¯re in doubt you can check their registry lists or ask family or friends for advice.  Choose one of their interests, or an item or items from their registry list, and design the basket around that theme.  For instance, if the groom is an avid baker, or the bride loves all things Italian, then you could have a basket with one of those themes.  Other ideas include using the couple¡¯s wedding colors or honeymoon destination as a theme.  If you think, you can probably come up with several different ideas for a wedding gift basket.  

The container in which you put the gift or gifts does not actually have to be a basket.  The container itself could be part of the gift, such as a picnic basket, fabric-covered hatbox, antique breadbox, or silver tray.  Packaging materials such as colored tissue paper, cellophane, shrink wrap, ribbons, and small containers are readily available at party shops, craft stores, card and stationery shops, and discount stores.  Try to picture how the basket will look as you select items and supplies, keeping a predominant color in mind for unity.  Here are some ideas for a variety of wedding gift baskets.

Breakfast-in-Bed Basket

Find a pretty tray that the newlyweds could use to have breakfast in bed.  Add two antique plates, bowls, champagne flutes, and a little flower vase.  A couple of linen napkins, packages of pancake or waffle mix, flavored syrups, jams and jellies, and packages of oatmeal or granola would also be good choices for this basket.  

Cooking Gadgets Basket

Select cooking implements that have handles, such as whisks, spatulas, wooden spoons, ladles, long-handled spoons, tongs, kitchen shears, corkscrews, knives, etc., and make them into a bouquet.  Tie the items together with curly ribbon and put in a vase-like container; be sure the container is heavy enough to hold the implements.  A stone crock or a terra cotta flower pot would work fine.  To make sure the items stay put, add some sponges or wrap a pretty dish towel around the bottom of the bouquet to make it fit tightly in the container.  Add lots of extra ribbon, and put in some stemmed silk flowers, greenery and baby¡¯s breath to complete the kitchen bouquet.  

Wok Stir-Fry Basket

Fill a wok with implements needed to make a stir-fry dish, such as a rice paddle, spatula, cleaver and cutting board.  Add a set of decorative rice bowls and chopsticks, and ingredients a cook might use for a stir-fry, such as different types of oils, soy sauces, vinegars, and spices.  Throw in some Chinese noodles and a wok cookbook.  Browse through the Asian cooking section of your favorite kitchen store to find some other small items to put in the basket, or fill in with more food products.  

Potpourri Basket

Use a large covered hatbox, and fill with colored shreds.  Put in bags of potpourri, scented candles, and a special bowl to hold the potpourri.  Use the couple¡¯s favorite colors and scents for your choices; using the colors on the couple¡¯s registry lists is a good idea.  Some people have allergies to certain scents, so make sure this is not a problem with the couple before choosing scented products for a basket.

Margarita Basket

If the couple is fond of Mexican food and drink, make a margarita basket.  Use a large basket, and line it with a colorful fiesta-themed fabric or a serape.  Put in a margarita set with a pitcher and glasses, gold tequila, triple sec, coarse salt, some limes or a bottle of lime juice, and a margarita recipe.  If your basket and budget are large enough, you can add a blender to the margarita basket.  Fun items such as castanets, a mariachi CD, a sombrero or dried chile peppers could be added for more color. 

Italian Pasta Basket

A pasta pot would make an ideal container for a pasta basket.  This could be a large stainless steel pot with a colander inside, or one of the smaller pots with a locking colander lid.  For a large pot, use a round red-checkered tablecloth; push it down inside the pot and let the edges spill out over the rim of the pot.  For a smaller pot, use napkins and arrange them so that the points hang over the rim of the pot.  Pack the pasta pot with gourmet pasta sauces, pesto, packages of breadsticks, dipping spices, different flavors of olive oil, sun-dried tomatoes, a bottle of wine, and some pasta, or if the pot is large enough, you could add a pasta machine.  

Tea Basket

If the couple loves tea, make a tea basket, using a Victorian-patterned hatbox as a basket.  Take off the lid and stand it up on one side of the hatbox so that it provides a backdrop for the basket.  Add some tissue paper in a complimentary color, and put in a teapot, strainer, and some tea packed in a set of teacups and saucers.  Packages of cookies, an unusual container of honey, a jar of sugar cubes, or some elegant antique teaspoons could also be added to a tea basket.

Coffee Basket

Choose a coffee-shaded basket or an attractive tin to make a gift basket for coffee lovers.  Fill the basket with packets of the couple¡¯s favorite coffee, travel mugs, gift cards from their favorite coffee shop, biscotti, cookies, and other snacks they might like.  If the container is large enough and your budget allows, you could add a coffeemaker to the gift basket.

Sports Basket

If the couple has a favorite sports team, use a soft-sided cooler, one with the team¡¯s logo if possible, and fill it with a blanket in the team¡¯s colors, travel mugs, a bag of peanuts, other paraphernalia such as caps, a pennant or umbrella, and tickets to a game that they want to see.  

Barbecue Basket

Collect some gourmet barbecue sauces, marinades, and rubbing spices, and put them into a galvanized tin drink tub, along with a set of grilling utensils, which usually will include long-handled tongs, forks, knives, and a barbecue sauce mop.  Line the tub first with a flannel-backed picnic table cover, and throw in a package of picnic table weights or clips.  If you have a large tub, add some mesquite chips or a bag of charcoal, or even a small grill.  You could also add a barbecue cookbook, skewers, a grill basket, a chef¡¯s apron and hat, oven mitts, or some condiments.  

Picnic Basket

Select a traditional picnic basket, or use a backpack or small rolling suitcase.  Add picnic supplies such as disposable or china plates, silverware, glasses, tablecloth and napkins.  Add a book of romantic verse, some wine or sparkling cider, a gift card to a local deli, and a plastic-backed throw to spread out on the ground.  Throw in a CD of the couple¡¯s favorite music, and a map on which you can mark some of your favorite picnic spots.

Movie Night-In Basket

Use a big metal bucket, and fill it halfway with shreds.  Put in some movie snacks, such as microwave popcorn, candy, drinks, or some of the couple¡¯s favorite snacks.  Purchase a gift certificate to a movie club to which the couple belongs, or add a certificate for a pizza.  You could also put in gift certificates to a local movie theater.

Baking Basket

If the couple likes to bake, arrange a basket full of baking utensils.  You could use a large tray or cake pan for a base, and fill it with cookie pans, a bundt pan, small heart-shaped pans, specialty molds such as a petite muffin pan or mini-donut pan, custard cups, a cookie press, and other baking aids.  Browsing though the baking section of any housewares store should give you lots of ideas.  You can line the base with cloth napkins or dish towels, and throw in items such as paper cupcake liners, colored icing, sprinkles, cookbooks, parchment paper, or baking spray.   

Laundry Basket

Fill a lined wicker laundry basket with laundry products such as detergent, fabric softener, stain remover stick, powdered bleach, special soap for delicates, and scented linen wash.  Throw in some antique wooden clothespins, and if the couple lacks a washer and dryer, a roll of quarters.  You could also add some ornate coat hangers, a mesh bag for fine washables, and a laundry bag to the gift basket.

Household Cleaning Products Basket

Use a plastic mop bucket and fill with cleaning products used around the home.  Good choices to put in the bucket would be furniture polish, scrubbing powder, brushes, dust cloths, glass cleaner, all-purpose cleaner, cleaners for the bathroom, and different types of cleaning wipes.  Add some room freshening sprays, dishwashing soap, and a variety of sponges.  You may want to also include a gift certificate for a maid service.

Flu Basket

Using the theme ¡°in sickness and in health,¡± make a basket of items the newlyweds might need for colds and other illnesses.  Put some over-the-counter medications for colds and the flu, aspirin, Tylenol, ibuprofen, chapstick, vapor rub, a digital thermometer, Vitamin C tablets, and other similar products in a basket.  Add a heating pad, a package of dehydrated chicken soup, some teabags, and a box of designer tissues.  A similar basket could be made of first-aid items, such as adhesive bandages, antibiotic ointments, medicated sprays, ankle wraps, gauze, and paper tape, put into a tin.

Garden Basket

If the couple likes gardening, fill a canvas gardening satchel with small hand tools such as spades, rakes, and bulb planters.  Add some flower bulbs, vegetable or flower seed packets, potting soil, and liquid fertilizer.  Gardening gloves or clogs, gardening books, a kneeling pad, and a gift certificate for plants would also be welcome additions to a gardening basket.

All of the above baskets could be covered with cellophane or shrink wrap if desired.  To cover with cellophane, which can be purchased at craft stores or party shops, cut a large square of the material; measure first by putting the gift basket in the center and bring the ends up about a foot above the gift.  Pull the ends up and tie just above the top of the gift, using ribbon, raffia, torn strips of fabric, or some other material.  If the gift basket is very large, you may have to use two long sheets of cellophane; put the sheets down to form an X, then bring the ends up and tie.  The cellophane can be put around the whole gift, including the basket; this is usually best if your container is not especially attractive, or you can spread out the cellophane inside the basket before adding the gifts, and then wrap only the contents if you want a special container to show.  Shrink wrap can also be purchased at craft stores, and has directions for its use on the packaging.  You will have to heat the wrap with a blow dryer, and it will crinkle and mold to the shape of the contents.  

Use your imagination to create a unique wedding basket that will delight the newlyweds.  Adding personal touches will make the basket very distinctive, and the couple will appreciate your thoughtfulness in choosing a gift that reflects their interests.  While gift baskets are readily available in many shops, making your own can be fun and a good outlet for your creative energy.
