What are Common Signs of Hearing Impairment?
Most hearing problems develop slowly over time and are therefore hard to detect. Several clues can indicate that you should seek help with your hearing. Do you have problems understanding people, in general, when they speak? If you feel that people generally mumble or speak softly, you might have a hearing problem. Crowds or noisy environments may increase your difficulty to hear individuals. You may also notice yourself frequently asking others to repeat themselves, or repeatedly being told that you should have your hearing checked. Another common sign of hearing impairment is difficulty hearing everyday sounds that you once heard normally. If you frequently do not hear doorbells and ringing telephones, do not hear birds chirping, or often need to increase the volume of the television or radio, you should have your hearing checked.
Do All Hearing Impairments Require a Hearing Aid?
Hearing loss is either conductive or sensorineural. Conductive hearing loss is the result of a problem with the ear canal, eardrum, or the bones connected to the eardrum. Sound cannot travel from the outer and middle ear to the inner ear. It usually progresses rapidly and is often accompanied by ear pain and/or drainage. Common causes of conductive hearing loss include excessive ear wax, a punctured ear drum, and fluid behind the ear drum. This type of hearing impairment can often be corrected with medical treatment and/or surgery.
Sensorineural hearing loss is the result of damage to the inner ear or the nerves that carry information from the inner ear to the brain. This type of hearing impairment is usually the result of aging or exposure to loud noise, and cannot be corrected. Hearing aids are usually prescribed to amplify sounds and therefore restore some hearing ability.
A combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss can also occur.
What Happens if I Ignore the Problem?
Many people regard hearing loss as a problem they can cope with and do not seek proper diagnosis and/or treatment. The thought of wearing a hearing aid or admitting they have a problem is so undesirable that they rather forfeit their ability to hear.
Studies show that hearing impairment can cause sensory deprivation. Your brain continuously receives information from your five senses and then uses that information to form your perception of reality. If complete information is not sent to your brain, you are not experiencing your reality in its entirety. Untreated hearing impairment has also been known to cause feelings of negative emotion, such as frustration, nervousness, anxiety, and depression.
Where Should I Get Help?
If you suspect you have a hearing impairment, visit an otolaryngologist (commonly called an ear, nose, and throat doctor or an ENT) for diagnosis. You may be referred to an audiologist, who can further test your ability to hear tones and speech. After the severity and type of hearing loss is diagnosed, medical treatment or a hearing aid is prescribed. If hearing loss is diagnosed in both ears, you should use two hearing aids for the best result. |
