Planning an all-day family outing at a large amusement park is fun and exciting. Give yourself a day or two in advance to start getting organized and find ways of saving time and heading off problems. Here are some tips that can help.
1. After setting the date for your family's outing, look for discount admission tickets at the usual outlets. Banks, credit unions, grocery stores, and other community services sometimes offer savings from $3 to $5 or more off each person's admission price. Be sure to get to the vendor before closing, since banks, for example, sometimes keep odd hours. It's also a good idea to get coins for toll booth fares if applicable and spending money for each person if needed.
2. Pack light. Give each person a waist bag for carrying money and small incidentals. Depending on each person's age, this could include a small tube of sunscreen, a can of pop or other beverage, and perhaps a cell phone for staying in touch with other family members if you separate. Using a waist bag will keep the back and arms free and help to provide a secure place for things that can't be easily pick pocketed from a purse or wallet.
3. Prepare the little ones. Dress them in lightweight clothing so they don't become overheated in warm weather. Provide a hat to keep the sun off their faces and sunglasses to protect their eyes. Apply sunscreen after arriving at the park. Tell them the general plan for the day so they don't start fussing to hit every ride or attraction:
"You get to choose five rides, so let's walk around and see what you're interested in. Remember, after five it will be time to go home."
Plan to bring or rent a stroller for toddlers, as they may become tired or sleepy after walking for an hour or two.
4. Consider packing your own food. Even if you want to eat fast food en route to the park or have a meal while there, it may be a good idea to pack a light lunch in the cooler that you can easily retrieve from the car at midday. Or you can at least bring an ice chest with several cold beverages or fresh fruit to cool everyone off and prevent dehydration. Individual bottles or cans of soda or water can be pricey, so you can save a lot of money this way.
5. Spell out the rules early. Give the kids instructions and limits when you first arrive. If you let the teens go off with friends, be specific about when and where you will meet and what to do if a problem develops. Remind younger ones to avoid strangers or seedy-looking people, though of course they will remain under your constant supervision. Provide a basic itinerary so everyone knows the plan for the day.
An entire day at the park can be loads of fun, especially when parents take time to plan ahead. Start early and stay late for an enjoyable time for everyone.
