Family cooks typically follow recipes found on the Internet or passed along from friends or relatives as well as those located in conventional cookbooks. Generally they are in a hurry, so these tried-and-proven recipes work well.
But when you have time to experiment with a few new foods or old favorites, you may come up with some family recipes of your own that you will want to preserve and pass down. Here are a few possibilities:
1. Work with your family's preferred tastes to create meal items they will enjoy. For example, if they often ask for Mexican food, buy a few seasonings like salsa, cilantro, cumin, and red pepper. Try new mixtures like scrambled eggs with cilantro or rice mixed with salsa. Try a dash of cinnamon with hot cocoa in the Mexican tradition for a slightly different flavor. You may have to experiment with ingredients a few times to get the entree the way that everyone likes it. When you do, write it down and start a collection of family favorites that originate with you.
2. Start a do-it-yourself family dinner night where each person makes his or her favorite new recipe. Everyone has to add a unique twist or make the entree a little different for an individual adaptation. They should write down their versions on a 3x5 card that can be explained over dinner while everyone tries out the new dishes. The meals can have a food group type, like pizza and pasta, or it can emphasize a theme or style, like Mediterranean food.
3. Encourage each family member to create a special version of a favorite food. Seven-year-old Susie might want to experiment with an ice cream dessert, while teenager Tim could work with a meatloaf or tuna casserole. Suggest that everyone name their item to make it an instant classic tradition that will be saved for later generations, such as "Tim's Tuna Temptation."
4. Use a digital or instant camera to take snapshots of each person making his or her creation. Get a quote from each one as well, and then organize a booklet by making copies of "pages" with every family member's recipe, photograph, and quote or statement on an individual page. You may decide to collect more recipes over time and eventually end up with a family cookbook that can be distributed to relatives with copies kept back for the next generation.
5. Host a family reunion or extended family picnic and invite relatives to bring their favorite food creations, along with a copy of the recipe. Have a taste contest or simply set out all the goodies with their recipes for everyone to admire. Someone can organize all the recipes into a multi-page cookbook that each family member can buy for about $3.00, which covers just the printing costs.
6. Have your family donate special food creations to worthwhile organizations. A tasty cookie recipe or a spicy chili mix can help feed hungry people at homeless shelters or food banks. Contact local agencies for guidelines about how to donate food.
Food and creativity go well together. Make both a special part of your family life and enjoy the delicious results both now and later! |
