The confirmation of a candidate within the church is an event to be celebrated by the entire parish.  This is the final rite of passage for a young adult to become a full member of the church, and takes several years of study and preparation.  When the final stage is reached 每 that of Confirmation 每 the candidate is accepted by a sponsor, who is a confirmed member of the parish that serves as a mentor to the young person during the preparation process.  This is both a great honor and a great responsibility, and should be recognized by an appropriate gift at the culmination of the journey.  If you＊re a Confirmation candidate who needs to find an appropriate gift for your sponsor, here are some ideas that you may wish to consider.

During the time that you＊ve spent with your sponsor, he or she may have shared a special devotion that they have for a particular saint.  A gold or sterling silver medal honoring the saint would make a thoughtful and lasting keepsake.  If they already possess such a medal, perhaps a statuette or book focusing on the saint would be more appropriate.

A cross depicting the life of Jesus is a beautiful way to exhibit the spiritual bond that you share through the church.  This gift shows six scenes from the life of Jesus surrounding the actual crucifix, making a truly poignant presentation from you to your sponsor.  If you＊d like to personalize it, you can have your name and Confirmation date engraved on the back, or a personal message from you to your mentor to thank them for the special role that they＊ve played in your life.

A Spiritual Bouquet is one of the most meaningful gifts that we can give to another person, and the celebration of Confirmation makes a wonderful backdrop for this.  For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the concept, a Spiritual Bouquet is the promise of a bouquet of prayers that will be offered for the intention of the recipient.  For instance, you may offer 10 recitations of the Hail Mary, 10 of the Lord＊s Prayer, 10 of the Glory Be and, perhaps, 10 personal prayers 每 all for the intention of your sponsor.  These promises would be included in a thank you card and presented after the Confirmation ceremony.

The newly confirmed can also give a book of Daily Meditations to his or her sponsor, which will provide them with spiritual words of wisdom that they can focus on every day.  Such books generally offer a single meditation for each day of the year and can be used repeatedly.  Bible passages are typically included with each meditation, making this the perfect year-round gift from candidate to sponsor.

At some point before Confirmation Day, have a picture taken of you with your sponsor and present it in a spiritually themed frame.  There are many styles that would be appropriate for the occasion and your sponsor would then have a keepsake of that special journey that you shared within the church.  If you＊re unable to obtain a picture of the two of you together, then include a nice picture of yourself in the same type of frame.

In the same spirit as the Spiritual Bouquet, you can purchase a Mass Card for your sponsor, with the promise of Masses being celebrated for a designated period of time 每 usually a year 每 for the intention of the recipient.  Often, prayers will be included in addition to the Masses.  Since the celebration of Mass is the most significant gift that can be given within the Church, this will carry special meaning when it＊s given as a ※thank you§ gift to your sponsor in honor of their mentorship.

A sterling silver or gold crucifix on a chain is an appropriate gift for any church related occasion, and will certainly make a beautiful gift for your sponsor.  This is sure to be a cherished by your mentor for many years and may even be handed down as a keepsake to future generations, as people often do with their jewelry items.

What you need to remember when choosing a gift for your sponsor is that most gifts that would be appropriate for you, as the candidate, would also be appropriate for your sponsor, as the candidate＊s mentor.  There are very few exceptions to this rule, which should help to reduce the amount of anxiety involved in choosing the best way to say ※thank you§ to that very special role model.
