Beautiful hair may begin with shampoo, but it ends with a clean brush or comb. Running a soiled implement through your freshly-shampooed locks can leave them feeling greasy or dull. Here are a few tips for keeping your hair tools ready for daily use.
1. Inspect your brush or comb daily after using them. Look for lint, excess hair, or even head lice, which are tiny insects that will crawl, not jump or fly, along the bristles or teeth of the hair tools. When you find things like these, it's time to clean the tools more vigorously. If you find just the regular grime, however, the cleaning can wait for another few days. (Note: Treat head lice by purchasing an over-the-counter treatment at the drugstore or by checking with your doctor.)
2. Remove the obvious dirt first. Use a long-tooth comb with fine bristles to remove visible debris from the brush. Run the comb down row after row of bristles to collect stray hairs and lint. Then use a tissue to remove these items from the comb, and throw it away. Continue the cycle two or three times until you have cleared the brush, and then the comb, of removable debris. Then wipe off stray hairs from the bathroom sink or countertop with a damp tissue and discard them.
3. Soak the hair styling tools. Put the stopper in the bathroom sink and run hot water, pouring a capful of shampoo under the water so that it foams. Place your comb and brush in the sink, letting the water continue to run until it covers the brush and comb with more than inch to spare. Turn off the water and let the implements soak for 15 to 30 minutes, or longer if you prefer.
4. Take them out of the water. Visibly inspect both the brush and the comb for any remaining debris. You may need to repeat the earlier process of using the comb to clean the brush, and vice versa, to get rid of stubborn adherents that the water did not soak away. When the brush and comb appear to be clean, unstop the sink to let the dirty water drain. Turn on the hot water and thoroughly rinse both comb and brush under it, turning from side to side to remove all suds until the water runs clear.
5. Use a cotton swab to pick between the bristles for remainder dander or oily spots. Shake out excess water from the comb and brush and lay them on a towel or the bathroom vanity counter to dry. Remember to rinse them after each heavy brushing or combing, especially after you have shampooed your hair, to eliminate immediate buildup of hair care products. Even so, plan to wash them in the way outlined above about once a week.
Your hair and scalp will feel better, stay fresher longer, and avoid oily buildup when you keep the comb and brush clean. Start caring for these important fashion tools today by making their laundering part of a daily examination and a weekly cleaning routine.
