Cigar smokers number an estimated twenty per cent of the United States population. With so 

many people lighting up their Coronas, Pantelas, and cigarillos, there needs to be attention paid to

the proper "Dos" and "Donts" of cigar smoking. Some of these rules are useful so you don't offend your fellow smokers. Other rules are designed so that you don't bother non smokers.     

Rule One

This is probably the most important rule of etiquette: watch your cigar ashes carefully. Cigars are obviously larger in diameter than a cigarette. And, since they are wrapped in tobacco leaves, they naturally have more ashes when they burn. It's easy to forget about the end of a lit cigar and drop

ashes on the carpet, furniture, et cetera. Ashes can dirty surfaces they are dropped on. They can even leave burn marks if they are still lit! This is a bad enough thing to do when you're at home, but if you're visiting somewhere, then it's even worse! You and your cigar habit might not be welcome to return!

Rule Two

If you don't have an ashtray available for your use, then do not lay your lit cigar down! Never lay it down on the edge of a table or other piece of furniture. It could easily burn the surface it's laying on. If you want to lay it down, make sure that you completely extinguish it first. (See Rule Three for details)

Rule Three

Because a cigar is normally thick in diameter, it burns slower than a cigarette does. In fact, because of their size and make up, cigars are usually difficult to light. Not only that, but if you don't puff on a cigar rather often, the lit tobacco will extinguish itself. Therefore, you don't need to smash the end of a lit cigar into the bottom of an ashtray. It will not only ruin your cigar, but

it will also make a mess in the ashtray. 

Rule Four 

Don't light another smoker's cigar for them. While it may seem like a good rule of etiquette to do so, it will make the smoker draw too fast. This can actually ruin the taste of their smoke. Instead, allow them to use your matches or lighter to light it slowly themselves. 

Rule Five  

Once you're completely finished with a cigar, don't just throw the butt on the ground whether it's lit or not. And don't just pitch it out of your car window! After you're sure that it's extinguished, dispose of a cigar in an ashtray, in a trash can or in another suitable receptacle.         

If you can't find a suitable place to dispose of it, then you'll need to wrap your cigar in a tissue or napkin until you can find a place. 

Rule Six 

You've seen actors do it in the movies, but, actually, smelling a cigar is a sign of bad etiquette. Instead, if you're selecting a cigar, look at the color of the wrapper, the name on the band, and its other characteristics in order to determine whether its your type or not. 

Rule Seven

And finally, but certainly not the least important rule of cigar smoking etiquette- do not smoke in prohibited areas. This include not only public areas, but in homes and residential areas too. While some nonsmokers simply don't like the smell of cigar smoke, some people are actually allergic to it. For example, you certainly wouldn't smoke in the presence of a person who has Asthma.     

When you're in a public area, if smoking is allowed, then sit back and enjoy your cigar.
