Marc Jacobs, The Man Behind the Brand 

Although he debuted his label in 1985, the fashion world was introduced to Marc Jacobs (the designer) much earlier. He learned to knit at a young age from his grandmother, met designer Perry Ellis at 15 and then attended one of the best fashion schools in the world ¨C Parson¡¯s in New York City. 

The Style 

The Jackets: They¡¯re cropped, with details like small pockets and oversized buttons. His dressy jackets come in an array of colors, with details like sequins, velvet and other unexpected fabrics and elements. His denim jackets are unique and appealing, by the details and the cut. 

The Shoes: His shoes have a sense of history to them. They are flirty, feminine and ultra sexy in an understated sort of way.

This line debuted in 2001 to major nationwide success. The line appeals to the youthful, stylish and somewhat edgy consumer and is cheaper than the Marc Jacobs line. All of his lines include, Marc Jacobs, Marc Jacobs Men, Marc by Marc Jacobs and incredible collections for Louis Vuitton.

Louis Vuitton

In 1997, Marc Jacobs began designing ready-to-wear for Louis Vuitton. He has created even more success for the 150 year-old company. He has brought what we know and love from Louis Vuitton and has made it unique. Take the Murakami handbag collection that he made famous for spring/summer 2003, by teaming with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. The handbag collections he creates (besides the Louis Vuitton staples) are both traditional, yet modern, functional and yet full of artistic value. 

The Awards

He has received so many during his career, however, here are some of his biggest awards.  

In 1984 he won the Perry Ellis Gold Thimble Award, the Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble Award, and the Parson's Award for Best Student of the Year. 

In 1986 he launched the first Marc Jacobs collection (with his partner Robert Duffy), and became the youngest designer to win the CFDA Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent. In 1998, Jacobs received the Women's Designer of the Year Award at the VH1 Fashion Awards and in 1999 named Jacobs was named Accessory Designer of the Year by the CFDA.

What Made Him Famous

In 1993, he was the head designer for Perry Ellis. For the spring /summer fashion show he took the grunge look to the extreme, pairing vintage-esque floral dresses with army boots. The look didn¡¯t go over well with the Perry Ellis customer, so Jacobs was fired. This obviously didn¡¯t hurt his career, as we all know where he is today, but he will go down in history for being the king of grunge.
