To have faith means that you believe in something that you cannot see or necessarily prove scientifically. Any religion requires faith but Christianity is unique in that it requires faith in Jesus Christ. Faith or belief that he lived, that he taught His people, that he suffered and died for all our sins and that on the third day he was resurrected; he came back to life and can never die again. Christians believe that by their faith in Jesus Christ that they too can be saved from their sins, or bad choices, because of the suffering and death of Christ. They too can live again. Some Christian religions teach that all that is necessary to receive eternal glory is to have faith in Jesus Christ. Others teach that faith alone is not enough that we need to prove ourselves through our works, deeds or choices. Either way it is imperative that a Christian has faith in Jesus Christ; that is what makes him a Christian.
Hope is akin to faith in that it is a belief in something that you may or may not be able to see or prove. It differs from faith by being an attitude or state of mind rather than an active belief. When faced with a crisis a true Christian will turn to his God, Jesus Christ, for restitution and resolve. Rather than placing their belief in men, that men can bring justice and peace, you place your hopes in Jesus that He will answer your prayers and provide due justice. The important part of this principal is to remember that all things are in accordance with the will of God. The believer does not choose which things will be resolved or how, but must continue to have hope in Christ that He will make things right in His own time and in His own way.
In the New Testament, where the teachings of Jesus Christ are recorded, Paul the Apostle talks about love, or charity (1 Corinthians 13). He begins by stating that if you give and do good and noble things but do it without love, it is as if it was not done at all. He continues by stating that love never fails, it stays strong and continues through adversity, it isn¡¯t jealous or mean. What is this kind of love? It is the kind of love that Jesus Christ has for all people. What kind of person is willing to die for his friends? Even more importantly, what kind of person dies for people who have yet to be born? This is the type of love that Christians strive for. This is the feeling that drives a Christian to give service. This is the kind of love that drives a Christian to do missionary work. This is the kind of love that drives a Christian to give their money and things away, or leave their family and friends to fulfill some calling they have felt in their heart. It is unconditional in nature and difficult for most to fathom, let alone practice. However, of the three virtues stated to be the most important to Christian beliefs, faith, hope and love, Paul says the greatest is love and without it the others are moot.
Most Christians believe that their faith is an ongoing, committed process. One does not become a true Christian with all the virtues perfectly in place in a moment. The change in your heart to have faith in Jesus Christ can come in a flash, but the lifelong commitment to that faith, the constant hope for the best and the striving for excellence in loving others is what drives a Christian to church each week, or to their gospel study group, or to whatever good thing they strive for in their lives. It is a long-term commitment and not one that is taken lightly once truly understood. More than basic morality, being a Christian requires active faith, endless hope and unconditional love. |
