Finding and working with the right people to help you plan one of the biggest days of your life is not an easy task.  Follow these steps to find the perfect florist to assist with your wedding.

Find the right florist:

Get word-of-mouth references from recently wed family members and friends.  If that isn¡¯t an option, try talking to the managers working at your chosen venue.  Chances are, they¡¯ll have cultivated good working relationships with other wedding pros, especially if your chosen venue is a popular wedding site.  If the venue has not yet been chosen, there is always the phone book.  Skim the ads to find businesses whose style looks like it might click with yours.  Going online is another great option as you can often view a florist¡¯s portfolio right on their website.  Even if you like what you see, you will still need to schedule a formal interview with all possible contenders.  

Interview:

Once the interview has been scheduled, start thinking ahead of time about what kind of information you¡¯ll want to leave there knowing.  It would be useful to buy a notebook for these types of interviews.  Write down all the questions you can think to write.  Don¡¯t forget to ask your fianc¨¦ what he thinks is important, too.  Bring the notepad along and write down the answers; you¡¯ll be able to compare them later.  While in the interview ask to see a portfolio.  If your styles don¡¯t seem to match up you might want to reconsider at this point.  If you do seem to be on the same page, start asking the real questions.  How much experience does he or she have with planning weddings?  Ask if you can come by sometime when he or she is planning for another wedding and watch him work?  Find out about pricing, even though you might not know exactly what kinds of flowers you want just yet.  And try to envision your wedding together.  If you throw out word like ¡°romantic¡± and ¡°lighting¡± and ¡°lace¡± but he can¡¯t let go of ¡°modern¡± and ¡°urban¡± he may not be your ideal florist.

Planning:

Once you have considered all of the possibilities and settled on one florist, you can begin delving into the specifics.  If you have pictures of what you want, show him.  If you don¡¯t, be very vivid in your descriptions.  Make sure he sees pictures of the attire to be worn by everyone in the wedding party, or at least a swatch of fabric from each.  To better help you envision the wedding day together, visit the venue together.   Have him make you a couple of mock arrangements far in advance.  This will cost you more but you won¡¯t regret it.  The day of the wedding is not the time to find out he has used too much baby¡¯s breath in the table displays.

Cost:

Flowers are not cheap.  If you want to save money, let your florist help you.  If the flowers you have your heart set on are out-of-season and therefore more expensive, let him suggest a close compromise.  Have the bill itemized and the costs laid out in front of you before making your final decision.  If you feel you have spent too much in one area, say the bridal party¡¯s bouquets, then ask him for money saving suggestions before he orders.  Don¡¯t let him go any further until you are completely satisfied with the costs.  Things can always be re-worked beforehand but not if you wait until it is too late.
