Talk to the artist. This is the best place to start. A person can ask the tattoo artist questions about his or her background. How long has the artist been creating tattoos?
Tattoo artists should be knowledgeable about their work and the equipment they use. A person may want to avoid an artist that doesn¡¯t know that type of needles or ink he or she uses.
When talking to the tattoo artist, a person should also ask about the price and the guarantees that come with the tattoo. Avoid a tattoo artist that charges excessively with no guarantees on his or her work.
Know what you are looking for. A person should have an idea of what his or her tattoo should look like. A good tattoo artist will give his or her opinion as to what the tattoo should look like and the best place to put it on the body. However, a tattoo artist should never talk a person into something he or she doesn¡¯t want.
Cleanliness. A person should make sure that the tattoo artist and his or her studio is sanitary. The studio should be clean and well organized. Make sure the tattoo artist is also clean. He or she should wear sanitary gloves during the tattooing process. Some of the more experienced artists will even refuse to open a new needle package unless the person they are working on is present.
Portfolio. A good tattoo artist will either have a portfolio or a display of his or her work. Examine the work carefully. How many photos are shown and what is the quality of each one? Artists usually display examples of their best work. A person should be weary if one or two examples are shown and/or the work is either mediocre or poor.
Clients. Tattoo artists who are confident in their work will be more than eager to refer a person to some of their previous clients. If a person is considering using a particular artist, he or she should make an effort to talk to these customers. What was their experience like?
A person should also take note of the tattoos that an artist has created for other people. Check the color and clarity of the tattoo. If the color is too light, this could mean the tattoo isn¡¯t deep enough. Is there scarring? This could mean the artist applies the tattoo too deep. Also check for any noticeable mistakes such as gaps in color or breaks and/or shaky lines. This is not a sign of a seasoned tattoo artist.
Better Business Bureau. A person can verify the reputation of a tattoo artist by checking with his or her local Better Business Bureau. The bureau will have a record of any complaints filed against the artist and if they were resolved. If there are numerous unresolved complaints, a person should be weary.
Getting a tattoo is a way for a person to express himself or herself. However, before getting inked, a person should know the tattoo artist he or she is dealing with. The results can last forever.
