A recent survey revealed that more than 90% of Americans believe in God. Yet only about 60% attend religious services on a regular basis. 

If you are one of those who do not routinely go to church, synagogue, mosque, or other place of worship, you may be wondering how to find one that meshes with your belief system. 

Perhaps you were raised in a particular faith but have wandered from that path as an adult. If you feel the doctrine was solid and would like to return to that belief system, look in the telephone directory's yellow pages for a listing of denominations near you. Find out when services are offered. Within Christianity, for example, the main worship service typically is held on Sunday morning. But more churches offer an alternative service on Saturday afternoon or evening these days. And larger churches frequently provide two to four services on Sunday morning to accommodate all members with limited seating capacity. 

Visit a congregation near you or one whose ad appears inviting. Look up its listing, if any, on the Web, and read the doctrinal statement. If the beliefs that are described match what you learned as a child and still wish to follow today, give that church a try. You may need to visit several times or try others until you find a "church home" that you are comfortable with. Then conforming to membership guidelines, you may wish to become a member. 

If you have never followed a specific faith system before, or wish to explore other options, browse church Web pages to find out what they teach and stand for. Americans are predominantly Christian, although there are a fair number of Jews, Moslems, and Hindus, among other belief systems. Read about the ones you are interested in before exploring any of them in depth or choosing one to visit. 

Christianity is a main world religion. Protestantism and Catholicism are the two main branches, but they are split from within to even more offshoots. For example, in North America alone there are nearly two hundred Protestant denominations with designations like Assemblies of God, Baptist, and Methodist. Find out more about the ones that sound right for you. Determine which follow Biblical teachings, since the Bible is the source book of Scriptural writings for Christianity. Some faiths accept the Bible as God's Word that must be accepted literally, while others view it as culturally oriented to the past, with room for modern adaptations. Explore your own beliefs to find out which type of church you would like to visit. 

Most churches, along with synagogues and perhaps mosques, emphasize communal membership, prayer to one God, giving of offerings to promote the faith or help the poor, and dependence on a written set of teachings. As indicated above, the Bible serves Christianity, the Torah (which comprises the first five books of the Bible) is for Jewish people, and the Koran teaches Moslems what to believe and how to live. Other religious works and beliefs exist as well.

When visiting a house of worship, pay attention to the speaker's message, the methods of worship, and the congregation's response. In these and other elements you will be able to decide if you endorse this belief system or wish to keep looking. 

Religion is a matter of personal belief and practice. But it assumes more significance when shared with others who believe the same things we do. Some belief systems even command the assembling of adherents. You also can meet with religious leaders of a denomination to discuss the tenets of that faith and to ask questions.

A spiritual journey is perhaps the most important one we will ever take in life. Start yours with a view to finding a faith that fits, one that ministers to your spiritual needs as well as one to which you can contribute.
