Child Bathroom Decor and Accessories Ideas
When decorating a child¡¯s bathroom, choose d¨¦cor and accessories that reflect the child¡¯s age and interests. The first thing you will need to do is choose a decorating theme. The theme can be based on a favorite color, or a favorite insect, animal, or flower for example. Although classic storybook characters such as Winnie the Pooh are always in style, try to avoid popular TV characters that might go out of fashion and seem dated in a few years. Also, do not choose a theme that is too babyish unless you plan on redecorating again soon. No pre-teen wants baby ducks decorating the bathroom walls!
If your children are old enough, let them suggest some ideas or colors on their own. If they are still too young to make their own decisions, let them pick the one they like best from a choice of two colors, fabrics, or drawer knobs that you have chosen. Incorporating your child¡¯s thoughts into the planning stages helps them develop a sense of ownership as well as pride in designing their bathroom.
Here are some ideas to keep in mind when decorating a children¡¯s bathroom.
1. Choose paint colors that are neutral but not boring or too adult looking. Pale yellow, blue, green, or aqua colors are good choices for children. These colors make great backdrops for naturalistic themes, and are less apt to show the dirt than white, beige or cream colored walls. Save these colors for the adults along with wallpaper. It is best to avoid bright primary colors as well. At first they may seem bright and cheery, but later they may feel claustrophobic in a small room such as the bathroom.
2. Sponging, rag rolling, or stenciling are easy ways to add interest to the bathroom walls. If you are artistic or have friends who are, ask one of them to paint a mural in keeping with your theme. Another idea that your child can help you with is to cut sponges into animal shapes and sponge decorate the walls. A wallpaper border can also lend a whimsical quality to the bathroom.
3. If you are on a limited budget, save money by concentrating on details such as paint, hardware, and accessories rather than tiles or new fixtures. Drawer knobs designed as fish, frogs, shells, ladybugs, butterflies, or flowers are sure to delight your small child and can be updated as he or she gets older.
4. Use accessories such as water glasses, liquid soap dispensers, soaps, towels, bath mats, small throw rugs, and hampers to provide splashes of color. Make sure that rugs have non-skid backings.
5. Keep window treatments simple--shutters, curtains, blinds, or shades work equally well.
6. If your theme is ladybugs or butterflies, paint a vegetable or flower garden on the side of the tub.
7. A shower curtain is one item that packs a lot of punch in the bathroom and goes a long way towards unifying bathroom decor. Avoid wild patterns and bright colors that will overwhelm the rest of the decor.
8. If you are remodeling, choose tile colors and patterns that will not become out dated as your child grows older.
9. Smaller children need a step stool to reach the sink to brush their teeth and wash their hands. Paint or stencil the step stool to match your theme.
10. Keep in mind that towel bars should be positioned at the child¡¯s height. The height can always be adjusted as the child grows taller.
