Has your watch stopped working?  Before you worry about expensive visits to the jewelry store to get it repaired, do something simple to try to fix the problem ¨C change the battery!

The first step in replacing a watch battery is to remove the back plate of your watch.  Sometimes, you can work a fingernail under the rim to pop it off, but often, you will need to use a thin nail file or a similar item for leverage.  Look for an indentation or small tab designed to make the task easier.      

Once the plate is off, you should see the battery sitting in its space.  Remove it and note the size of the battery and any markings that are on it.  You can write down the information on the battery, but it¡¯s often easier to just take the used battery along with you to make an exact comparison at the store.  

After you¡¯ve removed the battery, replace the back plate.  You want to put it back to protect the inner workings of the watch, but you¡¯ll be opening it up again soon enough, so there¡¯s no need to close it tightly.

Now it¡¯s time to head to the store to pick up a new battery.  Several different types of stores carry watch batteries, so you can choose whichever one is most convenient for you.  The most common are traditional jewelry stores.  You can also usually find a watch kiosk at the local mall.  The jewelry counters at discount and department stores also carry dozens of watch batteries.  In fact, any place that carries batteries may have watch batteries, so you could even find them at hardware or drug stores.

Depending on the set-up of the store, the batteries may be available on a small display, or you may need to ask an employee to retrieve one for you behind the jewelry counter.  When purchasing your new battery, pay careful attention to the letters and numbers on your old battery and make sure they match the numbers on the package exactly.  You should also compare the new battery to the old one if possible to make absolutely sure you¡¯re getting the right size.  If you have any questions, the store clerk will be happy to help you make your selection.  

If you bring your watch along with you, ask if the store is willing to replace the battery for you.  If they charge for the service, there¡¯s no need to spend the money on something you can easily do for yourself, but if it¡¯s free, you might as well save yourself the trouble.

Before you leave, ask if the store will collect your old battery for recycling.  While a watch battery is small, every little bit helps when it comes to keeping battery chemicals out of landfills. 

Now that you have your battery, you¡¯re just moments away from having a working watch again.  Remove the back plate of your watch again, and place the new battery in the empty space left by the old battery.  You may have to press lightly, but you should never have to force the battery into its spot.  Then replace the back, taking care to close it tightly this time, and your watch should be ready to wear.    

If changing the battery doesn¡¯t make the watch run again, or if you run into problems with any of these steps, then it may be time to call on a professional.  While changing a watch battery is typically a simple process, it¡¯s better to seek help if you face complications than to risk ruining your watch.
