It¡¯s not every day that a person would don a party dress for casual wear.  It¡¯s not every day that any of us would have the occasion to wear a special dress.  Special occasions are just that, special so it stands to reason that when you do have the opportunity to wear a chiffon blouse or dress they should be put away clean and ready for the next event.

Chiffon is one of several special occasion fabrics in the same range as taffeta, organza, and velvet.  These fabrics require careful and focused care if you consider them an investment.  If cared for properly they can look as good the fifth time you wear them as they did before you put them on the first time.

TYPES OF CHIFFON

Chiffon comes in several different ¡°looks¡±.  The most popular chiffon is silk chiffon.  It is a lightweight, delicate chiffon that is often used as an overlay or ruffle to evening gowns, dresses and separates.  It cascades and drapes beautifully hence its popularity.  The finish is usually a light crepe texture.

Next is a poly-chiffon.  As its name suggests it is a polyester version of silk chiffon.  It drapes and flows as well as the silk.  The difference is it¡¯s easier to care for.

Rayon crepe falls into the chiffon category in its lightweight incarnation.  Traditional crepe can have a heavier hand than a chiffon requires but a lightweight version of rayon crepe can be used in the same manner as a silk or poly chiffon.  Developed in France in the 1890¡¯s, rayon was known as the ¡°artificial silk¡±.  Today it is known as viscose as well as rayon.  It has a tendency to become unstable when wet so it may shrink or stretch.  Machine washing can shrink this fabric.

CARE OF CHIFFON

Silk chiffon is the most delicate of the three chiffons.  It has a tendency to snag or tear so special care should be taken when wearing it.  Consider the handbags and accessories worn with the fabric and exclude anything that will cause a snag.  This may eliminate jewelry that hangs below the neckline or earrings that dangle far enough to touch the shoulder of your clothing.  If you are wearing a belt make sure it is a fabric belt or the inside of it is covered and does not include metal edging or clasps that might catch on the fabric.  Consider the length of the skirt or pant and choose to wear them at a length that will not entangle them with your heeled shoes as you walk or cause you to trip.  Take care when sitting that the chair you are seated in or the table you are seated at has no sharp edges to catch the chiffon on.  It may seem silly to attempt but a bit of caution can make the outfit last much longer and your investment too.

Any stains that may occur should not be wetted and wiped.  Chiffon in general distorts when wet and far more damage could be done than can be undone once it is wet.  The fabric will not return to its original state after it has been stretched or shrunk.

Read the fabric label for cleaning directions.  Lightweight crepe and silk chiffon are usually dry-cleaned and some times hand washable.  Poly chiffon is polyester so it can be washed according to the manufacturers directions but check before you dump it in with your regular wash cycle.  It will usually call for a delicate cycle, cold water and a light drying.

Repairing snags and tears will require some discernment.  Since the fabric is light and delicate a repair will usually be obvious.  Snags and tears may require re-hemming at a higher height to hide them or a light stitching if they are tucked away and can be hidden by a belt or jacket.

Staining and spills are usually treatable through a dry cleaner.  Don¡¯t attempt to clean the stain yourself.  Remember chiffon stretches and shrinks when wet.  It is advisable to clean your garment after every use.  Do not allow stains and spills to stay untreated for any great length of time or you will have difficulty in removing them.
