If you¡¯re planning a wedding, you may have heard about the growing trend of placing disposable cameras on all of the tables at the reception. The purpose of the cameras is simple-- your wedding guests are encouraged to use them to take candid photos of all of the action at the reception. At the end of your reception, you will have lots of pictures shot by your friends-- shots that your busy wedding photographer couldn¡¯t possibly get on his or her own.
While the staged photographs that your professional photographer took will always be dear to your heart, there is something extra special about the spontaneous photos you will get by having your guests do some of the photography work. But what do you do with all of the great photos that your wedding guests have taken? If you¡¯re looking for a creative way to use them, why not create a guest photo scrapbook? It¡¯s a great way to display your candid photos, and it will make for a memorable souvenir of your wedding.
Here¡¯s how to create a really great guest photo scrapbook:
-- First, leave disposable cameras on every table at your wedding reception. You may want to leave instructions so your guests know that the cameras are for them to use to take candid photos. You should also indicate that the cameras should be left on the tables at the end of the reception. Disposable cameras made specifically for this purpose can be purchased at wedding specialty shops-- you should even be able to find pastel or bright colored cameras to match the d¨¦cor of your wedding. You can usually get a good discount when buying disposable cameras in bulk. Check your local discount store or research online for the best deals.
-- After the reception, mail the cameras out for developing, or drop them off at a local photo lab. In this age of digital camera photography, you may find yourself excited to see what you get back since there¡¯s no way of knowing ahead of time what types of pictures your guests took! Once you get your photos back, get ready to make your scrapbook.
-- Organize your photos and plan your layout. You will want to sort through your photos ahead of time, to get an idea of how big your scrapbook will need to be. Group like photos together and keep them separated with envelopes or file folders. It is important to plan out each page of your scrapbook ahead of time-- perhaps you want to have a page of dance floor shots or a page of pictures from the cake cutting. Once you have sorted through your photos, check online for sites that offer free scrapbook layout ideas-- you will be amazed at all of the creative ways you can design your scrapbook pages. Make sure to plan for any ¡°extras¡± that you want to add to your book-- you may want to start out with a copy of the wedding invitation or maybe a matchbook cover from the reception hall. Also, leave room for journaling if you plan to add written words to your book.
-- Purchase your supplies. Now that you have a general idea of how your want your scrapbook to look, it is time to buy your supplies. You can purchase a good quality scrapbook from specialty mail order companies or from an arts and crafts or discount store. Most craft stores have entire sections dedicated to the art of scrapbooking. Make sure that the scrapbook supplies that you buy are all acid and lignin free-- although it may cost you a little more, this is the only way to ensure that your photos will be preserved. Most scrapbooks come in a standard 12¡± X 12¡± size. If that¡¯s too big for your needs, look for suppliers that make smaller sized books. Also look for fun ways to embellish your scrapbook-- decorative sheets of paper are a good choice, as well as stickers and paper punches. You will also need cropping tools, adhesives, a paper cutter, matting and page protectors. If you have a lot of pictures, you may need to purchase extra pages for your scrapbook as well.
-- Compile your book. First, prepare your photos-- crop the edges off of photos that have too much wasted background space. Mat your photos using acid free card stock-- although it takes some extra effort to mat each photo, it really is worth the extra time! Cut a piece of card stock a little larger than the photo and then adhere the photo to it. The mat will frame your pictures nicely and make for a more uniform look for your scrapbook. Decorate each page based on the ¡°theme¡± of the page. You can also journal on each page-- that is, write down your thoughts about what is going on in each picture. In addition, stickers and decorative trimmings are a great way to dress up your scrapbook pages. Finally, make sure to cover each completed page of your book with a proper-sized page protector.
Creating a quality scrapbook takes some time, so look at it as a labor of love. Don¡¯t get discouraged if you spend an entire afternoon working on your scrapbook and only get one page completed-- just do a little bit at a time and before you know it you will have a beautiful memory book to share with your family and friends. |
