Blazers are a staple of the male wardrobe. Armed with a good looking blazer, a pair of slacks in a coordinating color, a dress shirt and tie, and you can go just about anywhere. Blazers are for those times when you need to look professional, but still casual enough to take it off and roll up your sleeves. They also translate well into weekend wear when matched with a pair of khakis or jeans.
Essentially, there are three considerations to make when choosing a new blazer: fabric, color, and cost.
Your choice of fabric will depend greatly on how often you plan on using the garment. If the blazer is going to be primarily for cooler weather, then opt for something in wool or other heavier fabrics. Should you plan on wearing the blazer year round, take into consideration the weather patterns for your location and go with a lighter fabric or blend. At all times, you should appear collected and confident while wearing your garment. This is impossible to do if you are sweating bullets during the summer or freezing to death in the winter.
Don¡¯t discount the value of a good tweed blazer as you look around. Tweed can go well with everything from jeans to flannel slacks. A nice silk tweed jacket can be easily dressed up for the office and quickly become a chic casual look for the weekend.
Do you travel? If you and your blazer are destined to hop a plane often, pay close attention to whether or not the fabric has been treated to resist wrinkles. Nothing is more nerve wracking than flying in at 10:00 a.m. for a luncheon meeting and opening your luggage to find your blazer in a mass of wrinkles. Avoid the stress and opt for a wrinkle resistant garment where the wrinkles are apt to fall out in a short time when the garment is hung up. One good fabric blend to look for is polyester and wool. This blend tends to resist wrinkles, travels very well, and is usually resistant to stains.
Twill is another good option for those who travel a great deal. Most manufactures will use a heavy cotton or cotton blend for a twill jacket, which allows the fabric to breathe, while still being stain and wrinkle resistant.
Once finding a blazer that will fit into your plans, take a moment and look closely at how the garment is put together. Make sure the stitching is even and secure. If you do select a tweed pattern, how well does the pattern match up at the stitching? A sure sign that the garment is poorly constructed is that the pattern takes an abrupt and noticeable change at the shoulders and the sides. Also check out the lining; does it appear to be made of a fabric that matches well with the shell of the blazer, and will it hold up over time?
Also be mindful of what you will need to do to keep the blazer looking good at all times. If the garment is to be dry cleaned, make sure you understand the instructions. If it can be hand washed or placed into a standard washing machine, make sure you understand what types of cleaning agents you can use and how the garment should be hung or placed for drying. Like many purchases, this is an investment. You want to be able to use the blazer for an extended period of time, and you want it to holds it¡¯s shape through multiple cleanings.
Color is important. Red and other bright colors may be fine if you plan on wearing the blazer in an informal setting; but if your purchase is for office wear, consider the darker and more subdued colors. Look around at what your colleagues are wearing and take hints from their examples. This isn¡¯t to say you have to turn your wardrobe into a clone of what you see, but do take note of what range of colors seem to be acceptable in your work place and use them as a guide.
If the range in your office runs from the conservative to the crazy, exercise a little restraint and keep your hands off that lemon yellow blazer you saw on sale, unless you plan on opening your own lemonade stand. Opt for classic blue or brown shades for the workplace, leaning toward the darker shades but sometimes mixing it up a little with a camel shade or a medium blue.
Cost is also a factor, both from the perspective of obtaining a quality garment that will serve you well and not being a budget buster. While it is very easy to spend up to $500.00 USD on a blazer, a quality product can be obtained for much less. Check out various discount men¡¯s stores in your area, and look for names you recognize. In our electronic era, you may also want to experiment with purchasing a garment through either online stores or auctions. Often these garments will be ideal for your needs and much less expensive. Above all, do not spend more than you can afford. While looking good around town and in the workplace is important, it should not be at the cost of endangering your financial health.
Blazers are a versatile part of any man¡¯s wardrobe. Whether for fun or for work, you can make purchases that will work for your lifestyle, provide you with years of service, and stay within your budget.
