Choosing a body scent can be more challenging than people think. You want something that not only smells nice, but also complements your individual style. After wearing a particular scent for years, you may decide to try something altogether different. Or you may want to find your own brand of scent that makes you feel special.
1. Consider the strength of scent you want to wear. Eau de toilet (or "toilet water") is not as bad as it sounds. It refers to a light fragrance applied as part of one's daily dressing. Eau de parfum, on the other hand, is often an oil-based essence of fragrance that will cling to your clothes or skin and linger for hours. Most women need just a slight scent for daytime wear, and select the merest hint of fragrance for this purpose. Evening dress, however, may entail the use of parfum for creating an unmistakable olfactory identity or impression.
2. Decide the form of fragrance you will wear. For example, you may decide to tuck a scented sachet into your pocket or purse. Or you may prefer to daub a touch of scented "toilet water" behind your knees or ears, or on the hem of your skirt or slacks. Applying a fragrant body cream or lotion before dressing is another method for adding a touch of scent to your ensemble. Naturally, you can experiment with all of these forms and others for a variety of looks and occasions.
3. Experiment with differing fragrance types. For example, you want to wear a relatively heavy floral when you go out in the evening. During the day, though, a sweet lilac scent may add a slight perfume to your everyday wear. For exotic occasions, try a spicy oriental perfume or a hint of musk. A talc odor may feel just right for professional dress and situations. Stop by the fragrance counter of a local department store to try a new scent each time you pass, or ask for a sample to take home.
4. Line your drawers. If you enjoy a lingering scent, make a sachet with your favorite or sew a small bag of potpourri and set one in each of your clothing drawers. Add a couple to your closet shelves or in the pockets of clothes that are hanging there. You may want to spray a bit in the closet generally for a faint odor that will not overpower those you meet when wearing the closet clothes. With perfume, less is more.
5. If you are allergic to perfume or sensitive to strong odors, check with your doctor or a dermatologist about optional scents or natural herbs that won't bother you. Also stop by a health food store to see if natural fragrances are kept in stock. You may be able to find something that will smell just right and not bother your nose, throat, or skin.
Choosing the right fragrance is important for those who care about the impression they leave on others. Try different scents until you find one that heralds your individualism.
