Most women dread the thought of shopping for a swimsuit, but for larger women, the challenge sometimes feels even more daunting. It used to be that swimsuits in large sizes were designed to cover up rather than enhance. Suits were usually black or navy blue, with skirts or unflattering boy-cut shorts. But in recent years, as water exercise has increased in popularity, larger women are demanding suits that are functional and flattering at the same time. Finally, swimsuit designers are considering the needs of real, active women, and the selection of plus-sized swimsuits is more exciting than ever. Here are some ideas to help you pick just the right one-piece suit for your body type.
First of all, consider what activity you will be doing when wearing the suit. The type of activity will dictate the style and fabric of the suit you purchase. If you are planning on wearing it to water aerobics classes in a chlorinated pool, you will want to look for a fabric that is chlorine resistant and a suit that offers freedom of movement and a minimum of fabric that can interfere with your range of motion. If the suit is to be more of a fashion item, these restrictions aren¡¯t as important.
Look at the fabric content. Cotton blend suits will fade out fast if worn in chlorinated pools, and latex quickly loses its elasticity and stretches out unattractively. Many suits today are made with polyester which is much more durable, holding their shape and retaining their color.
No matter what the activity, however, for larger women, one of the main considerations should be support. This is especially important if you are going to be wearing the suit for exercising. Always avoid suits with ¡°shelf¡± bras or no bra at all, and instead look for those that offer a built in bra, preferably in your size. Many manufacturers offer suits with cup sizes as well. You will feel much more comfortable with some built-in support no matter what style suit you select.
If you have a large bust, you should also avoid suits that are very low cut and opt instead for one that offers more coverage. There are lovely suits that are higher in front but plunge in the back, accenting the back. Many suits in this style offer built-in bras with cups and offer the best support for the large-busted woman. Halter designs are also very flattering to the larger figure and the design offers excellent support as well.
The cut of the leg should also be considered. Contrary to popular opinion, a straight or ¡°modest¡± cut may not be the most flattering. This cut hits at the fullest part of the thigh and accentuates this area. A higher cut leg rises above the fullest part of the thigh, making that area appear smaller by comparison. Check, though, to make sure the back offers full coverage. A suit that rides up in the back is both uncomfortable and unflattering. Skirts can balloon up and make movement awkward.
Many one-piece suits are made with a slimming panel in the front. This can slim down the stomach, and offer additional support. Make sure that the suit is not too tight, though, because this can lead to unattractive bulges in areas where the suit does not cover.
Many larger women tend to favor black or other dark colors, thinking that they are more slimming. For a bathing suit, though, look for patterns, which distract the eye. Vertical stripes that form a "V" pattern are very flattering. Floral patterns on a dark background are also flattering and can be paired with a plain, flowing skirt as a cover-up.
Spend some extra time shopping for a suit. Try on a variety of styles by different designers and remember that sizes can vary. Steer clear of skirts and suits with short as they only accentuate heavy legs. If you can¡¯t find a suit in a department store, considering shopping online. Today, there are a variety of websites offering swimsuits for women of all shapes and sizes. If you are looking for a suit to wear for water exercise, go to a site that sells suits specifically for that purpose. They are easy to find. All you have to do is search for ¡°swimsuit water aerobics.¡± A variety of sites will be displayed that offer special, chlorine-resistant suits in all sizes and styles.
With a wide variety of styles and sizes available to today¡¯s larger woman, finding the right suit is easier than ever. Don¡¯t miss out on the benefits of working out in the water or enjoying a day at the beach because you don¡¯t have a swimsuit. This year, you have no excuse!
