If you're looking for lip treatments in the winter time, you'll want to find something that prevents cracking and peeling. It's also best to find a product that sufficiently coats the lips with moisture, so you won't have to keep reapplying every 10 minutes. Some of the more well-known brands, like Carmex and Blistex, are always effective, but there are a few more lip balms that not only work, they add a tint or sheen to the lips; and they smell pretty good, too!
Burt's Bees Lip Balm with Peppermint Oil is perfect for soothing dry or cracked lips, and provides enough moisture to keep the lips from peeling. The lip balm also has an SPF of 15--this is necessary for any lip balm you buy, even if you're using it in the winter; lips are skin, and excessive unprotected exposure to the sun could cause damage. Burt's Bees also has tinted lip glosses and balms with the same protection, and some varieties also include eucalyptus oil to soothe the lips and prevent and heal fever blisters.
Well-known brands, like ChapStick and Blistex, have also made newer varieties of lip treatments, with fruit extracts, natural oils, and tints and colors to match a variety of skin tones. Chapstick now has a line of lip balms with mango, peach, and strawberry extracts and flavors, and Blistex's tinted medicated lip treatment can be worn as a lipstick or gloss.
More cosmetic lip balms and treatments, such as those from Jane and Bonne Bell provide more color varieties, as well as an array of flavors. These lip treatments are more popular in the spring and summer months. All Jane cosmetics include natural ingredients, such as fruit extracts and jojoba oil, which removes dead skin from the lips and makes lipstick go on smoother; however, Jane glosses can also be worn alone. Bonne Bell lip balms and glosses include Vitamin E and Aloe Vera, which renews the skin of the lips and gives the lips a healthy glow. Some Bonne Bell products and most Jane lip glosses and balms have an SPF-make sure that the SPF is no less than 15, so that lips will not become dry and cracked. Proper SPF can also help prevent fever blisters and cold sores--while these usually appear in the winter months, lack of moisture and nutrients applied to the lips could lead to sores at any time of the year.
All of these products are extremely easy to find- most major drugstores will carry a few or all of tthese brands. Stores like Walgreens and CVS will have varieties of Burt's Bees products, while Jane and Bonne Bell products are avaiable at stores like Wal-Mart, K-Mart, and Target. Local drugstores that are specific to your area may also carry these brands. And best of all, each of these lip treatments is under $10.
