The key to excellent hand care is to pay attention to your cuticles. What good is the ideal salon manicure if it is framed with ragged, bitten hangnails? Not only are poorly maintained cuticles unsightly, they can also be painful. The more care cuticles are given, the more beautiful and healthy they will be. Cuticle treatments remove hangnails, prevent them, and soften and condition cuticles during the day and overnight. 

Many prefer removing hangnails with liquid preparations rather than with cuticle clippers. This is often the case when hangnails are too small for clippers or are potentially painful if removed manually. An inexpensive cuticle remover is Blue Cross which costs about $6 and removes dead skin without cutting. Put a small amount of the milky liquid on the hangnails and let the liquid penetrate. Push back the skin with a metal cuticle tool. This action will slough off most of the dead cells. Take a small towel and rub the skin with gentle upward motions. More of the skin should come off onto the towel, and the remainder can be clipped off. The creative nail cuticle eraser, for $7.95, uses alpha- hydroxyl acids derived from sugarcane. The preparation sloughs off dead cells and conditions the new cells underneath to prevent hangnails from returning. Or use a pen to write off hangnails. The Bloom brush pen, at $15, has vitamin-rich oils as wells as substances that remove the dead cells. The pen has a convenient cap to allow you to remove hangnails at work, school or home.

Once you¡¯ve removed your hangnails and the dead skin, keep your cuticles in good shape with conditioning cuticle treatments. The following preparations should be massaged into the cuticle area and left in; no rinsing is required. Shea butter is a good preparation for day or night. Barielle therapy ($14.99) has four oils: safflower, sunflower, coconut and sesame, which  restore moisture to cuticles. Earth Therapeutic is an excellent value, using sesame oil for moisture and tea tree oil as an antiseptic which purifies the cuticle. Earth Therapeutic also includes an organic nutrient matrix including protein and calcium to build up the nail and cuticle area. Revlon produces a variety of cuticle treatments including a cuticle remover, a day cream and a night cream. The liquid remover ($6.69) softens as it clears away dead cells and allows the skin to grow back evenly and in good condition. The cuticle cream ($6.69) has lanolin and beeswax as its active ingredients and softens cuticles. The night cream is a similar preparation, but with more intense properties. Qtica ($15.99) is especially formulated for nighttime cuticle repair, and it has a vitamin A, D, E and B complex for revitalizing your hands. 

Many are concerned with the chemicals contained in many nail products, particularly in cuticle removers. The safest, most natural cuticle treatment on the market is Burt¡¯s Bees lemon cream for cuticles. Its active ingredients are almond oil, beeswax and rosemary with Vitamin E added. The cream is 95% natural and costs $16.98.
