The company of family and friends, the sounds of children playing and the smell of meat cooking. There is just something about a barbecue. Having a barbecue is not as simple a thing as just doing it, there is some planning involved in order to have a fun time for all.
The first thing to look at is the size of your group. Are you going to have an intimate gathering in a backyard or will you need to go and rent an area of a park for a larger group of people? The backyard is cheap and a more controlled environment, but most backyards are not going to be able to hold a large group. Dealing with park rental shelters you end up with the issue of cost for the space, needing to have specific date and time in which to use it and have to be done and cleaned up by a specific time and there is a lack of privacy. Such a decision should be based you needs.
An important aspect to barbecue is the kids. It is always a good idea to make sure you have something arranged to keep the kids occupied during the get together. You might even wish to find someone who really enjoys children to be in charge of the activities. Simple lawn toys such as flying discs and balls are great. A good supply of soap bubbles and the various toys that go with them are always welcomed by the children. If you are at a park or have a nice field near by, kites are great for kids. The only problem is that you do need a good deal of room to get kites going, so they are not a good idea for a backyard gathering. For those who are really adventurous you can go for an assortment of water guns, which can keep the kids occupied, but very often will result in everyone getting wet. The sounds of children laughing and playing are really a great soundtrack for a barbecue though.
Of course we can not forget the adults will most likely need to play as well. Some will be fine playing with the children and using the activities that are focused on them, but others will want to do something more organized. Volleyballs, horse shoes and croquet sets are all standard ideas for get-togethers and can be found at just about any sporting goods store at reasonable prices. You can also set up races and other friendly competition if you have the room for it. There should be something for the adults to do beyond just sitting and talking.
We now get to the important aspects of the event, the food. It is always a good idea to have something for people to snack on while they wait for the meat to get cooked. Carrot sticks and chips are the standard. Try to make sure there is a good variety since people have differing tastes. A good way to insure this is to make it pot luck. That way people can bring something they like and it will create a better mix of foods. Sometimes you will get something unexpected and unique that you will like that you have never tried before.
An important aspect will be the drinks. You need to remember that people will most likely be very active and so will be sweating. An often over looked fact is that alcohols and sodas are not good for rehydrating people, yet are the main drinks that can be found at barbecues. Try to make sure there is drinking water available to insure no issues with your guests getting dehydrated. Beyond that try to make sure there is a good variety of drinks for all. If you are a group which drinks alcohol you should be considerate and make sure there is also a selection of nonalcoholic drinks available for those who do not drink and for the kids. Get a mix of juices and sodas to cover all tastes.
Side dishes can be handled much like the snack food. Try to get a variety of foods and salads to fit the various tastes of your group. You can also go back to the pot luck idea for this if you wish to get a good variety going. Try to organize it some so that you will not get everyone bringing potato salad though. You can set it up so that some people will bring the snack food and some will bring the salads and other will bring breads or desserts. The bigger the variety of foods you get, the more people will be able to find stuff to eat.
Now to look at the focus of barbecues, the meat. Make sure you are ready to cook it of course. You will want to be ready with a full tank of gas if you are using a gas grill or plenty of charcoal and lighter fluid if you are going that direction. It really would look bad if when it came time to cook the food and you had to stop because you were not ready for it. In the same note make sure you have the various tools need to cook with, such as spatulas, tongs and brushes for your sauces as well as serving plates. Generally it is good idea to have all of this ready to go the day before hand so that you will know if there is anything you need to go pick up. Being ahead of the game can help to make sure you do not have to run out at the last moment to get anything.
When figuring out what to cook, try to make sure you once more are getting a variety of foods. Not everyone likes hamburgers and hot dogs. If this is a close group of friends you should already know their tastes and so should have a good idea as to what they all like. Try to make sure you are not doing all steaks and fish, but have simpler food such and chicken and hot dogs for the kids who normally want something they are familiar with and is more of a hand held food. If you really wish to get creative there are many recipes out there that can give you something better than just plan old hamburgers and chicken wings. When done right you can get some real tasty foods when you try something different. Sometimes it can be as easy as adding onions or garlic to you hamburger before you make the patties, although it is a good idea to make sure you tell your guests what is in the meats in case of possible allergic reactions.
We now come to the desserts.
The traditional dessert seems to be watermelon. Kids love it of course and a single watermelon can often be more than enough for the party after all the other food they have had already. If you are throwing the barbecue for a birthday or some other celebration, cake is a great dessert. Ice cream or cookies or something simple works best. You need not make dessert into anything big after all the work that has gone into the rest of the meal.
Now we get to the big chore of it all, clean up. If planned out ahead of time clean up can be simple. If you did pot luck, then everyone should take their own dishes and you only have to clean up what ever you used for you part in it all. A good way to get around a lot of clean up is to use paper plates and plastic silver ware, so that it can all be thrown away afterwards. If you are at a park or other public place, you need to be considerate and make sure you have not left any mess when you leave. Wherever you are you will want to make sure the guests know where the trash cans are so that they will be able to dispose of their own trash as they need to, instead of leaving it all until the end. When planned out right, barbecues can be fun for all and that is why people have them to begin with.
