As winter draws to a close and spring looms on the horizon, do you start thinking about your summer wardrobe? Do you start longing to shrug off the layers of winter clothing in exchange for comfort and style, but worry a little about your less-than-perfect shape? If so, you should consider adding Bermuda shorts to your spring, summer, and even fall wardrobes.
Bermuda shorts are often described as trousers that end at or near the knee. They were originally considered men¡¯s wear because of their beginnings. Bermuda shorts came into being at the turn of the 20th century when British troops found themselves in tropical military posts. To relieve their discomfort in the heat of those tropical outposts, many of the troops began to cut off their trousers at the knee. Eventually the heads of the British regiments recognized the need to revamp the uniforms of their military stationed in warmer climates and standard military issued ¡°short khaki trousers¡± was born. These shorts were worn with knee-high length stockings, also in khaki of course, and with the standard brown military shoe. These shorts later became known as ¡°Bermuda shorts¡± because the locals in Bermuda began copying the British soldiers who were stationed there and the fashion style stayed. It not only stayed in Bermuda, but it became fashionable in other parts of the word for both men and women.
The popularity of Bermuda shorts for both men and women is well-deserved. It is an attractive design for nearly every age and every body type. The cut of Bermuda shorts tends to minimize the less than perfect figure as they accommodate for warm temperatures. The just- above ¨Cthe- knee length allows for either a ¡°dressing up¡± of the shorts with a jacket or dressy shoes, or a ¡°dressing down¡± with a tank top and sandals. It is no more unusual to see businessmen in the country of Bermuda wearing Bermuda shorts with a blazer or sport jacket and a shirt and tie on their way to or from work, than it is to see Bermuda shorts worn over a swimsuit or as beachwear by bare-footed sun worshippers.
Bermuda shorts come in varying lengths and styles. The usual Bermuda short has a 10-13 inch inseam (which varies from the 2-4 inch inseam of street shorts.) They most often are knee length and can be compared to almost a ¡°split skirt¡± type of design. The civil servants and those in business in Bermuda or in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, who wear Bermuda shorts as professional clothing, wear them exactly three inches above the knee, with Bermuda hose, a button down, short sleeved shirt, and a conservative tie. The military- issued brown shoes have been replaced by brown or black loafers with tassels in the professional arena. This style is also typical for many preparatory and boarding schools.
When looking to buy Bermuda shorts, you will find a variety of styles, fabrics, and details from which to choose. Some Bermuda shorts come with front slant pockets and back pockets and sometimes even side pockets on the leg portion of the shorts. You can purchase Bermuda shorts that are a smooth fit across the hips and stomach area, but the more formal Bermuda shorts are most often pleated. Bermuda shorts can have zippered closures, be belted, or have elastic waistbands. Overall the shorts are quite fitted at the waist and through the hip area, leaving the leg area loose, which is ideal for warm and humid climates.
Bermuda shorts can be made from vastly varying materials and colors to accommodate varied social circumstances and weather. For informal wear, there are cotton and spandex blends which are machine washable and hold their shape in travel and during activities. Bermuda shorts made out of linen are ideal for humid and hot temperatures, but don¡¯t stay as wrinkle-free as other fabrics. There are dress fabrics of silk and velvet and leather available in Bermuda shorts designs also. If a fabric is used for long pants or skirts, you can pretty much find that fabric incorporated into a Bermuda short design.
So consider adding Bermuda shorts to your collection of versatile clothing this spring and summer. They have a long, proven history of comfort, usability, versatility, and figure flattering attractiveness.
