Everyone gets a case of the blues now and again, but when your blues start to affect your overall life, you may find yourself in a major depression. Depression affects your sleep and eating habits, your relationships with others, even the way you feel about the things you used to love. If you are experiencing depression, you may also be experiencing a great deal of stress.
There are many ways to relieve depression and you should always ask your physician about which ways are best for you. Among the many options you might have is through Yoga. Meditating and Yoga exercises stimulate your circulation and nervous systems along with other bodily functions. It also improves your concentrate and energizes your mind and body.
-- Mountain Pose
This is a standing pose. This pose is closer to meditation in that it can help you experience stillness and your own stationary power. Plus, it¡¯s a good way to start just about any Yoga exercise. Stand perfectly still, feet together, arms at your side. Keep your back straight and your hips in cat tilt or tilt your hips forward.
-- Sun Salutation
Sun Salution is one of the more common postures within Yoga. This particular exercise not only stretches your spine and joints, but also works to regulate your breathing, calm your mind, and energize your body. Generally, Sun Salutation is used to begin a set of Yoga exercises. You can use it to begin your day.
Position One: From the Mountain pose, bring your hands up into a prayer position in front of your chest. Exhale.
Position Two: As you inhale, stretch your arms up above your head. Arch your back from the waist, pushing your hips forward, keeping your legs straight. Do this slow, stretching through your spine and relaxing your neck.
Position Three: Now, exhale. As you exhale, slowly bend over until your hands reach the floor. Press them flat next to your feet, keeping your fingertips in line with your toes. If you cannot get your hands to the floor, don¡¯t be afraid to bend your knees.
Position Four: Inhale, bring your leg back behind you so that you¡¯re kneeling. Your back knee should be touching the floor, your front knee should be against your chest. Arch your back, lift your chin up to the sky.
Position Five: Bring both legs back behind you and support your weight on your hands and toes, just as if you¡¯re about to do push ups. Keep your body in line and look down to the floor.
Position Six: Exhale, lower yourself to the floor in this order; knees, chest, forehead, keep your toes curled under.
Position Seven: Inhale, lower your hips, point your toes and arch your back. Lift your chin to the sky and keep your legs together. When you exhale, curl your toes under and raise your hips upwards until you are in an inverted position.
Position Eight and Nine: Inhale and slowly repeat position four, switching legs. Then repeat position three.
Position Ten: By this time, you¡¯re on your feet. Inhale and stretch forward, then up and back over your head. Bend from the waist and stretch back only as far as you can.
Position Eleven: Exhale and return to Mountain pose.
Ideally, you should do these postures first thing in the morning. This can wake your body up and get you ready to take on your day. Most importantly, don¡¯t over do it! If you can¡¯t bend as far as you like, then don¡¯t push it.
These are just two of many postures in Yoga that you can use. Yoga is full of postures that are not only good for your body, but good for your mind as well. Through the meditative postures and movement, you can enjoy the moment, instead of dwelling on the negative. Yoga can pick up your current state of mind and help balance your mental state, letting you view the world around you through clearer eyes. Best of all, you can do these exercises in your office or at home. Ideally, you should seek the professional guidance of a teacher through classes.
Remember, as a rule, it¡¯s always best to consult your physician before trying any exercise program. If you are suffering from depression, a doctor will be able to recommend treatment.
Sometimes depression can bring a dark cloud to your otherwise sunny day, but it doesn¡¯t have to. If you think that you might be suffering from depression, consider Yoga as an alternative treatment. |
