Unfortunately, in the world we live in today, we are bombarded with violent images of murders, abductions and abuse on the nightly news. More often than not, this violence is targeted towards women since it is felt we are the easier target. It is hard to argue the fact that the average woman weighs less than and is physically weaker than most men. However, this does not mean that, as women, we should sit idly by wondering if we will ever become a statistic. By no means do we all need to go out and buy gym memberships to buff ourselves up to compete with a male attacker. As women, we just need to be alert and aware of our surroundings at all times, even when we feel we are in a safe environment.
Parking Lots
If it is dark or you are in an unsafe area, never ever walk to your car alone. If you are at work, have a male co-worker walk you to your car. Do not be ashamed to ask for this assistance. It is better to be safe than sorry. If you are at a public place like a mall, do not assume this means you are safe. Have a security guard walk you to your car and see that you get in safely. Once you arrive at your car, as paranoid as this may sound, scan the back seat. If the driver¡¯s side is parked near a van, do not be embarrassed to enter your car through the passenger side. Women are notorious for idling in the car putting receipts into their purse, fiddling with their cell phones or touching up their makeup. Once you are in your car, lock the doors immediately and start driving. Many criminals prey on women who are taking their time getting situated in their car.
Jogging
Many women like to jog in the early morning hours to get their exercise for the day out of the way. Some choose to run on main streets or jogging trails. If you feel you must jog or run during the early morning hours or late at night, find a partner to run with. Even having another woman or the family dog on a leash around as a partner will cause an assailant to think twice about approaching. As relaxing and soothing as it may be, do not wear headphones while jogging. Not only can you not hear cars that may be coming, but it would be extremely easy for an assailant to attack without you ever noticing they had approached. In Round Rock, Texas two years ago a young jogger wearing headphones was abducted only a few hundred yards from her own home during her midmorning run. She probably never heard her attacker approaching. If you can, carry your cell phone and a whistle or pepper spray with you. Never give an assailant the upper hand by being unarmed and unprepared.
If you get home and see your front door slightly ajar and you know nobody should be home at that hour, run to a neighbor¡¯s house or get back into your car and drive away, immediately notifying authorities. Many women get attacked because they convince themselves they can take on whoever may be in their home. Do not let pride or modesty color your vision. If you are being attacked, fight with all your might to get away and scream for help. Never ever simply give in and hope that an assailant will let you go eventually. Use your common sense to always stay alert and aware. |
