Most men would say that when their wife files for divorce it's a complete surprise.  Completely blind-sided and devastated the man searches for answers. The truth is, the signals had probably been there for some time but went unnoticed. Women don't generally leave a marriage without reasons; neither do they fail to leave little signals before they make the final decision to leave.  In my opinion women may actually want the man to notice and take some action to prevent the woman leaving.  Some of the signals may be very subtle and some very blatant, but all are there if a man knows what to look for.  I won't discuss all of them since the variations are virtually limitless, however I will discuss some of the most common.

I had a friend once who came home from work one day to a totally empty house.  On the mailbox was taped a "Garage Sale" sign.  It turned out that his wife of six years had held a Garage Sale that day and sold literally everything in the house... including his underwear.  Although a little extreme, this was a definite clue that divorce was imminent. A woman who works outside the house has every opportunity to plan and carry out her leaving.  Once she has made the decision she will most likely want to spend as little time as possible at home.  Even regular lunches with her husband or friends will become less and less as the time draws near.  She may find additional excuses to stay longer at work, or make longer and longer stops on the way home.

Although men tend to believe that another man is always involved when their wives leave, this isn't the case.  Women can simply get tired of their lives, or what they may see as a constant battle.  Looking for evidence of another man in these cases is useless.  It's much more likely that a woman will suddenly start developing habits or interests previously out of character for her.  A sudden interest in exercise and a more youthful appearance are a possibility. When another man is involved, the signs a wife has decided to leave will still be there.  Oddly enough, a woman may begin by talking to her husband about a new boss or associate.  In most cases this will be a man she tells her husband she doesn't like.  Generally this will be a smoke screen to sidetrack the husband, but in some ways this is also her way of telling the husband.

A man who suspects that his wife has become involved with another man should look for changes in her.  Arranging a sudden private getaway for herself, frequent trips out of town to visit, possibly purchasing another cell phone which she keeps absolutely private... all of these may be signs that a wife has decided to leave her husband for another man. Even in a good marriage things can happen that can suddenly turn happiness into a nightmare.  If all, or even some of the signs I mentioned are present, it's a good bet the wife has decided to leave the marriage.  It may just be time for a divorce.
