One way to reduce costs for a wedding is to create the centerpieces yourself. The following suggestions for do-it-yourself centerpieces are easy to make and range from fun to elegant.
Floating beauty
For a night wedding, consider filling low glass bowls with water. Place several floating candles in each bowl, interspersed with gardenia blossoms for a fragrant and beautiful centerpiece. First, select attractive bowls for the centerpieces. Pyrex or other heat-resistant types of glass are the best choices since even the small amount of heat from the candle flames could cause fragile glass or crystal to break; there is no way to keep the candles from lingering near the sides of the bowls. Purchase white floating candles; while all wax candles can float, those specially intended for floating are balanced to stay upright as they move around in the water. Unscented candles are preferable since the gardenias already have a lovely aroma. However, if you select scented candles, ensure the fragrance is mild and will not compete with that from the flowers or irritate guests. Trim the leaves and stems from gardenia blossoms and place them gently on the surface of the water so they will float. Want to add a little color to the arrangement? Add a few drops of food coloring to the water in each bowl and stir before you add the candles and flowers.
Casual beach fun
Having a casual summer wedding on the beach? Keep the fun going with sand pail centerpieces. Purchase children¡¯s tin or plastic sand buckets. Fill each bucket halfway with clean sand (sand can be purchased at home improvement or toy stores) and place a toy shovel into the sand. Place a pillar candle into the center of the sand and surround it with clean, attractive seashells such as starfish and sand dollars. Alternately, fill clean buckets with floral arrangements for a twist on a more traditional display.
Fourth of July
For a patriotic red-white-and-blue themed wedding, try a Fourth of July centerpiece. Purchase small picnic baskets to fill for each table¡¯s centerpiece; put shredded red, white and blue paper in each basket and leave the top flap open. Place small flags sticking out of the top of the basket. Put festive items of your choice ¨C wine or champagne, candy, glassware, flag cookies ¨C in the basket. Add some packages of sparklers or other fourth of July amusements in the basket, making sure they are legal in the area where you are holding the wedding.
Elegant lilies
The white beauty of calla lilies is a popular choice for both wedding bouquets and centerpieces. Calla lilies are a perfect choice if you want understated centerpieces with height. Use tall, narrow vases to showpiece three perfect calla buds on each table. Even though tall bouquets are not usually used for centerpieces since they may impede the view of someone at the table, these work since they are so narrow. First, group the lilies into threesomes. Then, wrap the grouping of stems with wide, white satin ribbon. Place them in the vases with water. You may also add clear or white crystals or rock to the vase to help hold the flowers in place.
Herb baskets
Summer is a great time for growing things and herb basket centerpieces make a pungent and attractive ode to the season. Use shallow ceramic pots or plastic lined baskets to plant a collection of herbs for each centerpiece. Some attractive herbs to consider are lavender, fresh mint and rosemary. Consider adding a miniature rosebush to the center of each herb arrangement. |
