Richmond, Virginia is historically known as the former capital of the Confederacy, but the city has much more to offer than its Civil War heritage.  Richmond¡ªa budding southern metropolis still retaining the feel of southern gentility and charm¡ªis an excellent center for cultural heritage and creating your own customs and traditions.  This frequently overlooked city of charm and beauty is the ideal spot to start the next chapter of your life¡ªi.e. your wedding.  In Richmond you will find some quaint and romantic spots to say your vows, some ritzy and trendy locations for your day, or some little known (or rarely thought of locations) to begin your marriage.  Since the city is growing, holds many ideal spots for weddings and romance, the following lists showcases a few of the city¡¯s gems.  

1.The Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens are a favorite wedding spot for Richomonders.  The gardens have several acres of divinely landscaped grounds, and its lush scenery, aesthetically pleasing flower gardens, and its central location provide wedding parties and guests with a peaceful setting for the couple¡¯s big day.  

2.The Maymont, following the trend from the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, also boasts a beautifully designed garden oasis within the city.  The key difference between the Maymont gardens and the Botanical gardens are that the Maymont hosts more ¡°exotic¡± landscapes of Italian and Japanese gardens on its Victorian estate.  Both of these locations provide gentile scenery and exquisite atmospheres, but the more modern bride might choose to have her wedding at the Maymont for its innovative gardening landscapes¡ªand the open feel of the Japanese gardens.  

3.Another garden setting resides at the Virginia House.  Here, the wedding party can enjoy a bit of Virginia history in the English country manor style house (that was dismantled and reconstructed inside Richmond proper), while also overlooking the James River.  The house also has quaintly decorated terraced gardens.  

4.For a more traditional approach to weddings, the happy couple can always say ¡°I do¡± in a church atmosphere.  While Richmond is packed full of spiritual houses, an excellent interfaith church is Bon Air.  The Unity Church of Bon Air does not require membership to have weddings on its grounds, or in its sanctuary, and its beautifully landscaped lawns and gazebo provide an elegant and whimsical air to the traditional wedding.

8.Richmond National Battlefield State Park provides an excellent setting for outdoor weddings.  Here, you can celebrate your love and new life while literally standing on the grounds of history.  And (to add to the whimsy of the day) you could theme your wedding around the legacy of the confederacy, or you could have a modern/traditional wedding that merely using the beautiful rolling fields and lush green grass of the battlefield as its backdrop.  

9.Another outdoor wedding location would be to say your vows along the path of Richmond¡¯s Canal Walk.  Traditionally, the paths have been used by walkers seeking to view the city¡¯s waterfront view, but you could easily have your guests and wedding party meet you at one of the many waterfront openings for your ceremony.  With this unique location you will have the backdrop of the city¡¯s hustle and bustle, its vegetation and greenery, and its central river to frame your ceremony¡ªvery much like a modern day painting that mixes nostalgia with the reality of the moment.  

10.Lastly, a great location for any wedding is on the steps of the Virginia Capital Building.  Inside the columned building, designed by the state¡¯s famed Thomas Jefferson, the only sculpture of George Washington to be created during his lifetime stands.  But, more importantly, using the capital building with its majestic columns, central city location, and symbolization of vital elements of Virginia history and life your guests will feel a sound testament for the city (and location) that you have chosen to say your vows.
