Traditionally, friends and family members have sent off young new couples in a rain of rice. Before the ceremony or reception, bridesmaids and groomsmen hand the guests decorated sachets of rice to use during the sendoff. As time has passed, however, couples have moved from the more traditional wedding customs into uncharted territory, using different items and even live animals during their own exits. Here are some different ideas for your own sendoff to help inspire you.
* Many photographers suggest the use of bubbles during a couple¡¯s final exit. The reason for this is that the light from the camera flash reflects off the bubbles, often giving the photos an ethereal look. In addition, many venue sites restrict the use of certain items during a couple¡¯s sendoff due to the extra time it would take to clean up. Bubbles are fantastic in this aspect in that they will simply float and pop, making cleanup nonexistent.
* Conservationists worldwide put up notices many years ago begging for couples to stop using rice as a sendoff due to the fact that birds would often mistake the rice for food and choke. A suggested alternative was to use birdseed instead. Like rice, birdseed is inexpensive and can easily be poured into elegant sachets to be handed out to guests.
* A beautiful idea for a sendoff, although a bit more costly, is to give the couple a sendoff with live butterflies. These butterflies can easily be ordered online and usually come in small cardboard boxes that have been engraved with the couple¡¯s names and the date of the wedding. Each guest is handed a box and when the couple emerges, the boxes are opened and the butterflies fly out, making for beautiful photographic opportunities. The downside to this is that some of the butterflies die during transit, leaving many of the guests with a still box.
* For the couple that loves to have fun, the guests can send them off in a blast of silly string. Be sure to invest in cans of silly spray that are both non-toxic and non-staining. The last thing you will want to do is stain the bride¡¯s dress or the groom¡¯s tuxedo.
* If the couple loves flowers, and roses especially, buy bags of rose petals from a local florist (or silk rose petals from a crafts store, if you prefer) and place a handful or two of them in decorative bags for the guests. Against the white of the bride¡¯s dress, the rose petals will look beautiful.
* If the wedding is taking place sometime close to New Year¡¯s when they may be in abundance, you can invest in champagne poppers or silly noisemakers (if the venue prohibits items that will make a mess) to help send the couple off.
* Another costly sendoff would be to release doves when the couple emerges. With this sendoff, not every guest receives a dove to release. Usually, the dove handlers are rented for an hour and they are in charge of releasing the doves.
* Another fun idea for a sendoff is to use colorful confetti or confetti eggs for the couple¡¯s sendoff. Confetti eggs are simply hollowed-out eggs that have been filled with confetti and are smashed on people¡¯s heads (usually an Easter tradition). Bear in mind, however, that confetti will usually not come out of long hair until it has been washed so be sure to clear this with the couple first. |
