When you decide to register for wedding gifts, the first step is deciding where to set up your registry. The following tips will help you select the best store or stores for your wedding registry.
Selection: It is important to choose a store or stores that have a good variety of items in styles, colors and themes you find appealing. Often department stores and stores that specialize in housewares are your best bet since they are likely to have an array of products that interest you. While you can certainly register at a specialty boutique if they have the one-of-a-kind wine glasses you have been yearning for, you may want to register at another store so you can also get a blender, toaster and some spatulas. Try making a list of items you need and want before you select the store; this will help you isolate the stores that can best meet your needs. Some modern couples register at one store for houseware items, then register at other locations for less traditional goods. Some example registries include home improvement stores, garden centers and nurseries, furniture stores and electronics stores. Other couples are registering with travel agents for portions of their honeymoons.
Ease of registering and checking the registry: Most larger stores offer computerized registry systems. This makes it easy for you to select your gifts as well as for your guests to get a copy of your list of desired items. Ask how often the store updates the registry; quick updates help prevent duplicate gifts. While many stores still have registrants write down the items they want on their registry, others have automated the process and equip the happy couple with a bar code scanner; they simply walk through the store, point the scanner at the items they would like to include and click.
Price: Your guests will appreciate it you register at a store with competitive prices and you may get more items since their money will go further. Also consider the range of prices at the store where you register. For example, if your chosen store carries only expensive items, some well-wishers will be unable to purchase something for you there.
Services: Look at the extra services each store offers. If you need extra help choosing the items for your registry, you may want to make sure the store has a specialized bridal consultant who will help you. Does the store offer gift wrapping? This is a nice convenience for your guests, and some stores will discount the service or wrap for free when people are purchasing from a registry list. It is also important to make sure the stores offer shipping service. Many guests will prefer to send the gift and will appreciate being able to shop and ship in one stop.
Locations: Where are the stores located? Is your registry list available at each location of the chain or only the store where you registered? If you are likely to have guests or well-wishers from many locations, it is helpful to register at a national chain so that everyone can easily access your registry. Also, ask whether registry data is available online; this is an added convenience especially for those who cannot easily get to one of the physical store locations. Online registries also make it easy for brides to check on their lists to see if they need to register for additional items or to remove items they have already received from another source.
Bonuses: Some stores offer benefits and bonuses to registrants. For example, you may be able to buy items that were on your registry at a discount after your wedding. Others offer free items, bonuses or rebates to people who join the gift registry.
Returns and Exchanges: Make sure to ask about the return and exchange policies for items on and off the registry. Find out how long you have to return things and whether you may get money or only merchandise or a store credit when you return an item. |
