There is a popular saying, ¡°If you don¡¯t look good, you don¡¯t feel good.¡± The reverse can also hold true. Looking and feeling good can help us perform well during job interviews, give us confidence on first dates and in life in general. While we may have a few pounds to lose, or wish that we had more stamina, these are longer-term goals. What should you do when you want to look and feel good now? Here are some suggestions.
1. Take a 15-minute walk outdoors. The combination of being outside in touch with a nice breeze or some sunshine and the energy boost you get from a brisk walk can bring a rosy glow to your cheeks and get your blood moving. When you have increased energy, you tend to feel better.
2. Go get a haircut. Of course, don¡¯t impulsively make a major change that you may regret later. You may want to get a trim, or even some highlights. If you have had a dream haircut in mind, go ahead and go for it!
3. Get a massage. You can choose from a quick 15-minute massage at your local health food market or a full hour and a half massage from a private registered massage therapist. Better yet, get a fourhanded massage¡ªone that is given by two massage therapists at the same time. Pure bliss!
4. If you¡¯re a woman, put on some fresh make-up, or buy a new lipstick that makes you feel good. Perhaps the cosmetics counter will even offer you a free makeover. If you¡¯re a man, give yourself a clean shave and splash on some invigorating aftershave. Women, don¡¯t forget about the feel-good powers of perfume!
5. Go shopping and buy that book you have wanted to read. Don¡¯t wait until it comes out in paperback.
6. Do something for someone less fortunate than yourself. Buy a paper from the homeless man on the corner, or sit down and lend an ear to someone who is having a difficult time. You get the benefit of knowing that you did a kind act, plus your own life will look a bit rosier once you have added a new perspective.
7. Tell a joke. When you smile, you instantly look more attractive, more approachable and friendlier. Also, research shows that the act of smiling actually makes individuals feel happier. Of course, telling jokes makes your friends happy as well, so share the wealth!
8. Get a manicure or pedicure. This even works for guys! There is nothing like having your nails done to give you an instant pick-me-up and a literally polished appearance. The hand and arm massages that go along with manicures are a great quickie stress reliever. Pedicures are even better, as there is simply no way to feel bad while your feet are immersed in warm, bubbly water and being massaged and pampered.
9. Develop an affirmation that you can tell yourself as an instant mental pick me up. For example, you could say, ¡°I am feeling really healthy and happy today,¡± or ¡°I am looking really good!¡± Notice how you are saying it as though you actually are, at this very moment, looking or feeling that way. Saying it out loud can be very powerful, and before you know it, you will find yourself feeling the way that you proclaim yourself to feel. This, by the way, is why it is not a good idea to walk around all day complaining about how crummy you feel or how fat you look.
10. Listen to some uplifting music that makes you want to move your body. Music stimulates creative areas of your brain, and can provide an instant mood lift. Try something like salsa, reggae or lively classical to get that feel-good feeling. It¡¯s simply amazing at how much your mood can improve after listening to one three-minute song.
Keep looking and feeling good by taking care of yourself every day. You¡¯ll find that if you take care when dressing, and take the time to shave or put on make-up at the beginning of every day while listening to uplifting music and saying an affirmation, that your other fitness and health goals will be easier to attain, because you are already living the life of a person who looks and feels good!
