Urinary tract infections affect people of all ages and genders. The following is some information to help you understand the symptoms and treatments for a urinary tract infection. 

What is the urinary tract?

The urinary tract consists of the urethra (the small tube that your urine comes out of), Ureters (the tubes that are connected from the kidneys to the bladder) and the bladder.

What does the urinary tract do?

Our bodies produce different kinds of waste.  Sweat, gas, stool and urine are examples of these wastes.  Our bodies release these wastes in different ways.  Our kidneys, which produce the urine, help filter the toxins from these wastes and along with our urinary tract, dispense of it.  Without this filtration process, the toxins would build up in our blood and can become quite dangerous.

Who is susceptible to these infections?

Anyone can get a urinary tract infection.  The most affected are women; however, young girls and boys can also be affected.

What are the symptoms of a urinary tract infection?

The most common symptom of a urinary tract infection is the constant feeling of having to urinate and only having a little bit of urine come out followed by a burning or tightening sensation.  There are three types of urinary tract infections, urethritis, cystitis and pyelonephritis.  Urethritis affects the urethra, cystitis affects the bladder (this is the most common) and pyelonephritis affects the kidney. The symptoms of pyelonephritis are a pain in the lower back along with a high fever and vomiting.  Pyelonephritis is the most serious and it is important to seek treatment immediately after the first sign of an infection so that the infection does not reach the kidneys.

Depending on the age, the symptoms in a child can vary.  A child or infant that is too young to describe the feeling may have a high fever, abnormal smell or unusual colored urine and even blood in the urine.  Having blood in the urine is a sign that the infection has spread to the kidneys.

What are the treatments for a urinary tract infection?

Studies have shown that drinking cranberry juice has reduced the chances of getting a urinary tract infection by 20%, however it is not understood how cranberry juice actually helps.  Researchers believe that it is a specific compound in cranberries that lines the urinary tract and stops the bacteria from adhering to the walls.  Some physicians will suggest drinking cranberry juice as a prevention measure, however when an infection occurs, antibiotics will be prescribed to clear up the infection.  Antibiotics clear up about 85% of the infections; however, the rate of recurrences remains high. 

How can I prevent a urinary tract infection?

Reducing bacterial contamination of the genital area may help prevent many recurrent urinary tract infections.  Young girls should be taught to wipe the genital area from front to back, especially after a bowel movement as to not push bacteria towards the urethral area.

Common causes of urinary tract infections are bubble baths.  We associate soapy bubbles as a good cleansing agent, but bubbles are a good source for bacteria to thrive, have your child shower instead.  If it is not possible to shower, limit the bath time to only 15 minutes. Uncircumcised males have a higher risk of getting a urinary tract infection.  A Gentle cleansing around the foreskin will help reduce bacteria buildup. Urinate after sexual intercourse to flush out any built up bacteria.
